I'm not too sure about Windows' ability to adapt to new systems, but given that in my experience Windows 7 was able to adapt on boot to a new motherboard (forgot I might have to reinstall Windows, averted disaster there), does anyone know whether Windows 7 would be able to adapt from a X58 desktop to a SB based laptop?

The version of Windows would be contained in one hard drive that would be swapped between systems (not too often though), so technically, it's not as if I'm running a second Windows installation with the same key as the Windows 7 software itself is being ported around.

Just wondering as it'll conserve some space on my 160GB 320 series, otherwise, I'll have to go through the hassle of managing two Windows 7 versions on one drive.
(I could get two SSDs, yep, but I'm semi-broke at the moment... Chilling

So far no windows has been able to boot to another system, a new mobo differers a bit, depends on how close the 2 mobos are, but a new system is different, a laptop is very very different, I have been wanting to test win7 for this but have not had the chance, so why don't you just clone the desktop ssd to a laptop drive and pop it in the laptop and see if it boots, that way if it does not boot, you can put the original laptop drive back in since you never touched that, the same with your desktop drive, in short you got nothing to lose.

Ahh, that seems like a much better approach than just popping it in and seeing what happens, heh. Will post what happens when I eventually get a laptop.
