Ive asked about this a few times but never really got a straight answer...

a CPU that has a memory support of 2400MHz.
ram that is 3000MHz.

can an overclocked CPU gain support for a higher MHz then the advertised memory support?

idk anything about a CPU's memory support or if it can change.

question 2:
has anyone got 2 titan XPs, both clocked at 2GHz stable, watercooled?
i would not mined see the benchmarks on that!, mostly frames per second benchmarks though, 1080p and 4K, i have only seen 2 air cooled but no water cooled, kinda sucks

Yes and no, above 2666Ghz the difference is not much, but higher speed ram in an oc environment does help but how much depends on how much you are pushing your oc you and how old your system is, newer systems not so much, older system yes.

keep in mind your ram speed is not limited to the cpu, its limited by the mobo, the memory controller will use your ram at its speed when you set it in xmp regardless of whether you oc your cpu or not.

Not sure if anybody has their titan here yet but bench of titan at 1080p is pointless. At 4k makes all the sense int the world.

ok well how about a 6950x, base clock 3.0GHz, OC to 4.5 or 4.7GHz, should that make the required difference?

yeah 1080 would be pointless, if that is the only reason someone has to get a titan XP, but 4K can be for both gaming and workstation, my...dream build i guess you can say, would be a hybrid gaming/workstation, top gaming with as much power as possible for work loads, editors, rendering, etc, its always nice to know where things stand for both, single player/work on 4K monitor, gaming online on 1080p monitor.

What your cpu will OC to will mainly depend on the cpu itself first, the 6950x is a 10 core cpu, the higher the number of cpus the lower the oc will probably be, you also don't want to go above 1.4 vcore max, plus other factors.

If you can hit 4.4Ghz with vcore below 1.4 I would consider you a very lucky man.

While workstation needs more cores because it will have use for them, gaming pc will do better with less cores but higher speeds on those cores, aka 6700k at 4.5GHz is much better then 6950x at 4.0GHz for gaming.

of course the higher in res you go the less the cpu comes into play in gaming.

well from what i understand, games don't use more then 2 cores, and i know that the 5960x could reach 4.5 and 4.7GHz, plus this would be a liquid cooled CPU, using its own personal open loop, quad 140mm thick rad, push-pull, to keep it cool, noise is not a major issue with me, im use to hearing fans ramp up and down, plus i know that the 6950x can hit 5GHz under liquid nitrogen, plus that is not what i want, its just 4.5 or 4.7 if possible, plus i wont build it myself so i will be getting a binned CPU, but this is only a hypocritical build, i most likely wont be able to get a rig like that until after volta comes out, and im sure there will be better hardware by then, but!, the main issue i had was relating to the current issue that i came across, and that's using 3000MHz ram and a CPU that only supports 2400MHz, so the question is, can a base clock 3.0, that's overclocked to 4.5 to 4.7GHz gain the full use of that 3000MHz, after all, faster is better, so don't worry about it not being possible for the 6950x, i just would like to know if a CPU's memory support is hard locked or if an overclock can amp up the max memory speed that is listed as "supported memory"

Yes memory speeds change when you oc the cpu to higher speeds.

keep in mind your ram speed is not limited to the cpu, its limited by the mobo, the memory controller will use your ram at its speed when you set it in xmp regardless of whether you oc your cpu or not.

However keep in mind the important part of memory is timings, higher speed memory is going to have slower timings. I rather use a lower speed memory with better timing then a faster memory with slower timings. but thats just me.

I have to be honest with I don't know anybody that has a 6950x with a 4.5GHz oc that is stable with good temps, trip or quad rad or not.

Hope that helps

by choice ram currently stands at 15-15-15-34, 128gb, @ 3000MHz, sooo, no worries there, and i was talking about the 5960x not the 6950x, the 59 was able to get 4.5 and even 4.7GHz, why can't the 6950 get at least 4.5GHz, am i right.

6950x = 10 cores
5960x = 8 cores

more cores = less oc speed.

most 5960x I have seen are around 4.3GHz to 4.5GHz. And I would call those high oc when you consider the start is 3.0GHz, and that is with a good binned lucky cpu and mobo.

I can find better timings than 15-15-15-34.
