Topic: A question about cooling Posted: 05 Jul 2015 at 3:34pm |
So I'm on the cusp of taking the plunge on a new build and some questions began forming in my mind. I'm looking at the Apollo level 3, but switching out the i7 for the i5 4690k and upgrading to the gtx 980t, which will be overclocked like the cpui. Everything else is staying the same, aside from the optical drive which will be upgraded to Blu ray, and the cpu cooler will be the top end air option rather than the liquid one. With that in mind, will the three fans that come with the case, and the design of the case itself, be enough to keep everything running cool enough, or should I order more fans?

Hi Reaper18..... If you mean one of the Noctua coolers, then they are excellent coolers and tops in dependability. The gtx 980ti will exit most of its heat out the back of the case, so the Apllo case fans will have no problem. No need for more fans.
Hope this helps. |

It does, thank you. Do you think I should go with the NH-D15, or would the D-14 do just fine?

Either one will give excellent cooling. The newer d15 has improved fans and how they mount to the block of fins, the mounting clip not sticking out as much for video cards that mount close. Also the fins sit a little higher off the mobo for those that want the taller ram , which aren't really needed anyways. D15 seems to keep about 2C cooler.
D14 works great, the D15 improves it. If you can, get the D15, but the D14 has been tops for years for a reason. Good luck. |

I'll probably spring for the D15 then since it's not much more. Thanks for the advice and rapid responses.

Hi Reaper18,
The D15/D14 are great air coolers for your CPU. If this was my computer I would mount a fan in the top-middle fan position blowing in. This would provide new fresh air that feeds directly into the input of the D15/D14. The Apollo case is big and the air flow is from the front fans to the back exhaust fan. I like the idea of getting fresh outside air directly into the intake of the cooler. Now if you do this it probably won't make a big difference in you CPU temps, maybe none at all. It is just something I would experiment with in my own system just for the heck of it. I do know it helped a bit with some of the old HAF cases. Frank |
