Budget: 2500 Expectations: quiet system that can last several years without needing upgrades Usage: gaming mostly (FPS's, Fallout4, borderlands etc) also watching and editing videos Special Needs: no real special needs. the computer will be in my finished basement where it is relatively cool. I think that's all the questions for now. ill keep tabs on this post and answer any questions u have for me if u need more specifics. thank you |

welcome and my opinions:
1) for strictly gaming usage needs with less than 3 vid cards, i recommend the z170 platform over X99. X99 is more of a gamer+work station or extreme graphics config. the Skylake cpu is faster overall and easier to over clock. 2) you don't need that much power supply unless you plan to add another vid card now or in the near future. a single 980ti+entire system won't pull more than 475 watts from the wall. if you go with 2 vid cards i would actually recommend skipping the 850w and go with the 1000w for more headroom. 3) i would personally upgrade all of my fans for better thermal and acoustic performance. you want to get static pressure fans designed to push air through obstructions (i.e. radiators, hard drive cages, etc.) and air flow fans designed for open areas and rear/top exhaust. 4) the Apollo is a Corsair case that is reviewed well as an "all-arounder", not great in any one area, but not bad either. you can go either liquid or air cooling, but it only supports up to 240mm/280mm radiators. the Coridium is another Corsair option in this class and supports up to 360mm radiator water cooling. i would ask one very important question of you before finalizing my build advice: what kind of monitor or tv do you plan to game on? a lot of people make the mistake of either not getting enough horsepower or too much for what they need. |

thanks for the reply
i just plan to use a regular monitor. i think the one i use now is 1920/1080. i didnt know they made better than that but it has been awhile since i bought a monitor. i was consdering buying a new one...do they do to 1440x now? i would only plan to spend 200-300 on a monitor so im assuming that would still be 1080. ill take a look at the coridium chassis. ill lower the power supply then back down to 750 as i dont plan on adding a 2nd vid card in the future. here is the system with my changes. 2469 cost. i feel satisfied but id like any other opinions before i purchase. i didnt upgrade the fans so u guys think that will be a bother? the computer will be in rooms <75 degrees and i didnt upgrade the fans on my last rig and havent (yet) had any heating issues. Hi Godhand456,
I have the Apollo, too. Here are a few tips that I hope you find helpful: - If you purchase the 240mm cpu cooler, DS will mount it on top of the case (due to size). This makes the Apollo louder and more dust-prone. I would recommend the Digital Storm Vortex 120mm Radiator Liquid CPU Cooler (High-Performance Edition). It should satisfy your cooling needs fine, while also closing the top of the case from dust and noise. - The side panel windows can get quite dusty, so regular cleaning is a must. Also, the way the side doors close creates a small gap, so it isn't completely closed off from dust. - The thermal performace and airflow of the case is excellent, so I wouldn't recommend upgrading the system fans unless you have extra money in your budget for it. There is plenty of space within the Apollo for cool air to come in and warm air to exit. Good luck with the build. Happy gaming! |

ok so after spending hrs reading these forums. ive decided to go with this system:
System Configuration:Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Digital Storm Apollo (Black) Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: DELAY: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) (DELAY OF 5-10 ADDITIONAL DAYS) Motherboard: ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING (Intel Z170 Chipset) (Up to 5x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series Power Supply: 750W EVGA SuperNOVA Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (250GB Samsung 850 EVO) Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (1TB Western Digital - Black Edition) Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB (ASUS Strix Edition) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H100i GTX - 240mm Radiator Liquid CPU Cooler (Extreme Performance) H20 Tube Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Blue) Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks CPU Boost: Stage 1: Overclock CPU - Up to 4.4GHz (Depends on Cooling and Motherboard) Graphics Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Memory Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory OS Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows CD) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks NVIDIA SHIELD: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) so everyone is saying "get the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB (ASUS Strix Edition)" over the generic one. so i changed it. however people said that the asus one doesnt blow air out the back like the generic ones do. instead it blows the air into the case so a case with good airflow is essential. my question is, is the apollo good enough for it and if so, do i need an additional fans? thanks |

just FYI, the Coridium is avail as an alternate choice. that case supports up to 360mm radiator.
anyway, i would always suggest upgrading the case fans under any circumstances. i wouldn't worry about the Strix card in your situation either way. even with the heat being dumped into the case, the case has plenty of room and sufficient cooling to move that hot air out of it (especially with the upgraded Corsair AF fans). one last thought to leave you with: you've spent over $1000 between the cpu and graphics towards high quality gaming; why would you cheap out on a monitor? you have to think of the monitor as the the final leg of your visual experience, yes? ideally, you should spend as much on a monitor as you do on the graphics you put inside the computer. Hi Godhand456,
You have a nice build. You can mount a 360 rad in the top of the Apollo. The front is limited to 240 or 280. You can also mount a 120 rad in the bottom. The Apollo is a nice big case with lots of interior room. I would remove at least one of the HDD caddies to improve air flow from the front fans. You will be OK with a single Strix cooler. After you get your machine you can add a 120mm fan in the bottom that would blow cool air up towards the GPU. This will help mix cool air in the case. If I were you I would go with the Super Nova G2 850 even if you don't think you might go SLI in the future. If you ever wanted to go with a 4k monitor you will want to add a second GPU. Frank |

is that from personal experience Frank? because w/o modding the case i don't see how? from Corsair's own documentation top mounts only support 2x120mm or 2x140mm. then there's the top 5.25" drive cages that i don't think are removable. |

Hi db188,
Not from personal experience. Here is what the tech specs say on the Corsair site: Fan Mount Locations Front: (x2) 120/140mm Top: (x3) 120mm or (x2) 140mm Rear: (x1) 120/140mm Bottom: (x1) 120mm Fans Included Front: (x2) 140mm Rear: (x1) 140mm Radiator Mount Locations Front: 240/280mm Top: 240/280/360mm Rear: 120/140mm Bottom: 120mm After looking at this some more I see you are right about the modding. You will have to use a thin rad and loose one or two of the 5 1/4 drive slots. Depending on how thick the rad is. Here is a picture of a 360 mounted. Frank Edited by FrankW - 01 Dec 2015 at 4:53am |

Hi db188,
Glad to help. The same problem exists with the Corsair 450 case (Coridium). Maybe even more of a problem because the Coridium has one less 5 1/4 slots. Here is a picture of the Coridium with a 360 rad mounted. There are a lot of people building with no DVD/CD drives these days and may not miss the 5 1/4 mountings.
