    Posted: 11 Jun 2016 at 1:17pm
Hello all,

I am wanting to upgrade my 1st generation bolt from a 500w PSU to a 600w PSU so I can add a GTX 980 ti. My question is, what PSU would fit in the Bolt 1 case? Does the current bolt 3 600w PSU work?

Also, is there room for the gtx 980 ti hybrid card in the bolt 1?

Thanks for your help!

Hi I'm not familiar with bolt one so I'm not sure.

I believe you can put one of those strider 600w psu in yours, what psu do you have now?

Best thing to do is contact DS to be sure but maybe bp22 or somebody knows the answer.

Yea, I have no clue. I forget those dimensions. Can you tell me the make and model (I'd love the model #) of your current PSU. I'll then see what I can find for you that is within that range. 600w PSU's are bigger than 500w at all. So we should be able to find you one.

The next question is are you ready to completely redo the wiring? I don't recommend using cables designed for one PSU on another. Same make or not.

The original Bolt used the specialty Sparkle 1U server rack mounted power supplies. If I can find the model I'll get back, but SparklePower.com has a list of their products. The psu in the Bolt you have should have info sticker to refer to.

The 500 watt rack psu was tested to be able to handle a Titan X I believe in the Bolt. The 980 ti and Titan X have the same tdp so your 500 watt might work.

I think the psu is the 500 watt SP1500U4BG. I didn't check for a 600 watt.

I've talked with Sparkle and ...ehh, they weren't that helpful. The power supplies are FSP units, Sparkle just resells them.

Here is FSP's site that you can order the units direct. Be mindful that the lengths vary. The more efficient power supplies are more expensive, but they are shorter.

Thanks for you help! Much appreciated. It looks like the 600w Plat is 20mm longer than the 500w. I doubt that will be an issue?

You'll have to take a look under the cover and see how much space there is. If I recall correctly, DS put a blower fan right next to the PSU to assist with the cooling of it. Also, make sure you are looking at the same 500W as in your case. The one is your case might be discontinued and not listed on that page, so the length may not be representative.
