Topic: Boot Time with SSD Posted: 04 Jun 2012 at 4:56pm |
I bought my DS System last year, it runs great but boot up time was not the best for SSD. I have mid-range performance Dell XPS 15 with running Intel 330 Series 180GB SSD sadly only running at SATA II although boot time is still much faster than my DS desktop computer. It takes about 40 sec. on my desktop to boot to my desktop versus 16 sec. on my laptop computer. I found this is quite odd considering my desktop have much higher spec. compare to my laptop yet somehow boot up time is so much slower than my laptop.
My Desktop spec: CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe System Memory: 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3 1600MHz Boot Drive: 2x Intel 510 Series 250GB SSD (SATA III) (RAID 0) Data Drive: Seagate 2TB Barracuda XT HDD Data Drive #2: Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200 HDD Optical Drive: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Video Card: EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Windows OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) My Laptop spec: CPU: Intel Core i5 2410M 2.30GHz Motherboard: Dell 0YR8NN System Memory: 4GB Dual-Channel DDR3 1333MHz Boot Drive: Intel 330 Series 180GB SSD (SATA II) Optical Drive: DVD-burner Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M 1GB Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Windows OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) |

The only thing that I could possibly think of is that, for some reason, the RAID controller is somehow taking a long time to initialize. However, that is just a guess.

I guess in general desktop computer take longer time to boot up than a laptop computer. Also it might partly caused by my ASUS motherboard, it takes a few extra sec. during POST before starting Windows 7.

addendum:
Here's a fun observation, I am a newbie so i do not know what is counted as "boot time" but take a look at this video where they boast a 11 sec boot time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsGlfauQjbU however, for me, I count the "boot time" as when you press the start button to when you see your desktop icons and everything WITHOUT any further loading/hourclass going on. So if you look, they turned the computer on approx on the 2 second mark on the video, and I do not see their windows screen until the 40 secs mark, so i am not sure where / how they are counting the 11 secs any pros please advise. |

Update:
Just talked with a tech friend of mine and confirmed what i feared is true. WHen they tout boot times, what they are only talking about is the first time you see "windows loading" message to the time you see the desktop..... but obviuosly to consumers like me, all i care about is, from the time i press the damn on button to the time i see the desktop. So in a sense, false advertising. and also, they did it in approx 40 secs, mine is 45 aprox, i'm happy with mine then since it is more or less in line. |

bprat22 has provided you with a link I am curious because I'd like to see what is says, as it factors in a lot of variables that other programs do not. From there we can start looking at what some of the possible issues could be, to see about getting you into a "normal" zone. Edited by Tidgxor - 05 Jun 2012 at 2:46pm |

There was an older thread on boot times awhile back, I posted my old laptops time, it was around 156 seconds or so I believe.
The oldest computer I own (that still works) is my rig from 95, I wonder what it can do.. |

Yeah, I feel the same way you do. When I heard someone said it takes 20 second to boot up his computer I am thinking from the time I press power button and not after POST screen and RAID Controller screen. I used BootRacer to test out different computers I have at my house. My Digital Storm gaming PC Time to Logon: 7 sec + Time to Desktop: 17 sec = Total Time of Desktop: 24 sec CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe Memory: 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3 1600MHz Boot Drive: 2x Intel 510 Series 250GB SSD (SATA III) (RAID 0) Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB Windows OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Antivirus: Norton Security Suite --------------------------------------------------- My Dell XPS 15 laptop Time to Logon: 6 sec + Time to Desktop: 7 sec = Total Time of Desktop: 13 sec CPU: Intel Core i5 2410M 2.30GHz Motherboard: Dell 0YR8NN Memory: 4GB Dual-Channel DDR3 1333MHz Boot Drive: Intel 330 Series 180GB SSD (SATA II) Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M 1GB Windows OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Antivirus: Norton Security Suite --------------------------------------------------- My Custom-built Family Desktop PC Time to Logon: 18 sec + Time to Desktop: 32 sec = Total Time to Desktop: 32 sec CPU: Intel Core i3 2100 3.10GHz Motherboard: Gigabyte H61M-USB3-B3 Memory: 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 1333MHz Boot Drive: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 HDD Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 Windows OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Antivirus: Norton Security Suite --------------------------------------------------- My old gaming PC (Gateway FX 530 Desktop PC - 2007) Time to Logon: 21 sec + Time to Desktop: 31 sec = Total Time of Desktop: 52 sec CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad QX6700 2.66GHz (factory-overclocked 3.2GHz) Motherboard: Intel OEMD975XBGG1 Memory: 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 666MHz Boot Drive: 2x 500GB Seagate HDD (RAID 0) Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Windows OS: Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Antivirus: Norton Security Suite --------------------------------------------------- Base on these results I got, My DS gaming PC boot up faster than my entry-level Core i3 PC by only 8 sec. This is rather disappointing, I think my biggest disadvantage here is that SSD has no support from TRIM since it is running in RAID 0, Let us hope the next version of Intel SRT will finally provided TRIM support for SSD in RAID 0. What all is on your list of start-up programs? I have an older generation of Intel SSDs in RAID 0 and have around a 10-11 second start-up time.

Actually I thought my start-up programs and number of my USB devices might slow down the boot time so I ran number of test by disabling all the start-up programs. Oddly enough it didn't helped at all. I don't know if BootRacer not reading right but weirdest thing for me is each time I got different result: (NOTE: Test 1 through 5 with all start-up programs running as usual.) Test 1 Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 6 sec Total time to desktop: 13 sec Test 2 Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 16 sec Total time to desktop: 23 sec Test 3 Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 17 sec Total time to desktop: 24 sec Test 4 Time to logon: 8 sec Time to desktop: 16 sec Total time to desktop: 24 sec Test 5: Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 23 sec Total time to desktop: 30 sec (Test 6 through 10 all start-up programs disabled) Test 6: Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 22 sec Total time to desktop: 29 sec Test 7: Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 17 sec Total time to desktop: 24 sec Test 8: Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 14 sec Total time to desktop: 21 sec Test 9: Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 5 sec Total time to desktop: 12 sec Test 10: Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 17 sec Total time to desktop: 25 sec I really don't know what to do make of it base on these test results. My Dell XPS 15 got a much more consistent results overall total time to desktop from 13 to 15 sec and that is running with all start-up programs. Both my desktop and laptop share a lot of similar start-up programs: Norton Internet Suite Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Network Magic Acronis True Image Home Renesas USB 3.0 Host Controller Sidebar Stardock Keyboard Launchpad Intel RST Edited by heoban89 - 06 Jun 2012 at 1:43am |

It looks to me like a driver might be hanging, unfortunately I'm on my work laptop for awhile and can't help diagnose too much. Generally speaking BootRacer is pretty problem-free, especially if you are using the same settings for each "race."
The variation in times, with a higher average than you would except is symptomatic of a driver or service hang. |

I think it is probably the bottomneck from my ASUS motherboard and partly caused by my SSD without TRIM supported. |

It could be the motherboard, I'm not too familiar with that specific board, but have you checked to make sure all the quick-boot options are turned on in the BIOS? I don't think its the lack of TRIM, as mentioned, I have two older SSDs in RAID 0 with no TRIM support, and get 10-11 second boot-up times. If it was TRIM related, it would build over time as more little particles of information get dropped onto the SSDs.

Yeah, I did my check out the setting in my BIOS that might cause the delay but I don't see any thing that might caused it nor was it any quick boot option for that matter. on second thought the delay is most likely caused by the motherboard rather than my SSD considering I tested my SSD with HD Tune without TRIM I was getting average 901MB/sec vs. my laptop's SSD only running SATA II with average 256MB/sec. |

You have faster rates with HD tune than I do (and you should, given mine SSDs are three generations older than yours), yet you have on average 10+ seconds more of boot-time.
If you just break out the ole stopwatch, how long does it take you to get to the Windows loading screen? |

From the POST screen take about 6-7 sec Follow Intel RST screen take 4 sec and then take additional 4 sec to detect my boot drive. So it takes about 14-15 sec just to get to the Windows loading screen |

I run a few more test in normal start-up.
Test 1 Time to logon: 8 sec Time to desktop: 16 sec Total time to desktop: 24 sec Test 2 Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 22 sec Total time to desktop: 29 sec Test 3 Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 13 sec Total time to desktop: 20 sec Test 4 Time to logon: 7 sec Time to desktop: 16 sec Total time to desktop: 23 sec It is simply difficult to narrow down the boot time for sure since every time start up with quite with timing apart. |
