Topic: Can my Vanq 4 lvl 4 run this... Posted: 03 Aug 2016 at 7:13pm |
Hey all, I purchased a Vanquish 4 level 4 last winter. Absolutely love it. I've been using a 21 inch 1080 p monitor. Hardly up to the standards of this system. So I've been looking to upgrade monitors. Go big or go home?
Can I run this? Easily? Barely? (I really have no clue) I'm thinking of going wide screen (feel free to criticize this choice by itself)- such as this: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSharp-34-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B00PXYRMPE?ie=UTF8&ascsubtag=computing%3A765711&e=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&linkId=804d577c735244a47fc890dd6879a0e8&redirect=true&ref_=as_li_ss_tl&tag=dt-incontent-btn-20 Dell UltraSharp U3415W 34-Inch Curved LED-Lit Monitor. 3440 x 1440 Pixels, 34 inches. Ok lets see.
First your 980 is going start falling short of 60fps at 1440p some games will just get you there and some will fall short be around high 40s or low 50s. That monitor was a great monitor, but now in days we are getting faster refresh rate than 60Hz like 120Hz or 144Hz. The dell monitor is 60Hz. My advice is get an ips 144Hz monitor at 1440p and upgrade the gpu to 1070. And just to be clear yes your 980 can run just about any monitor but can it max out games in that monitor then no, not on highest settings. You will find 980 below the 1060: I'm assuming budget is limited so I'm not going to mention 4k monitors and etc. Edited by DST4ME - 04 Aug 2016 at 1:56am |

that Dell might be nice for work, but as a gaming monitor it's too slow. not only is it 60Hz refresh but its pixel response and lag is really not ideal. there are better options out there.

All,
Well I don't like what I'm hearing but I'm glad I'm hearing it! Thank you very much for your replies. And thanks for pointing out that monitor is only 60Hz. I noticed shortly after I posted. That explains why it's on such a sale. :( I agree that whatever monitor I get, it needs to be at least 100. So I do not see myself upgrading my graphics card any time soon. Maybe a year from now?? Frankly, I don't play a lot of high end games. (but with the right monitor and setup that could change) So new question: So is the wide screen that I posted (assuming I got one that could do around 100 Hz) really out of the question for my graphics card to game on? I would hate to settle on a monitor and then wish I hadn't a year or two later. I see the monitor as a more long term investment/purchase than a GPU. I could in theory replace the GPU in a year or so easier than a nice monitor I believe. Thoughts? It would be pretty sweet to experience League of Legends on a widescreen... :) |

I don't mean to answer my own question, and I truly do value any opinions. This link seems to suggest I'll be "okay" with a widescreen. I think I'll go that route, knowing that stuff will be playable on high to ultra, with the idea that I can upgrade GPU in a year or so as the need arises.
But- I'm open, and appreciate, criticism on this point. http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2312-ultrawide-gpu-gaming-benchmark-fps-performance |

I Promise you that once 4k ips panels come out that can do 120Hz you will regret whatever monitor you are getting.
I only trust reviews from sites I know to be creditable. as you see the benches I posted show you at 2560 x 1440p with one 980 coming up short keep in mind that 34" is gonna have a little higher res than that, so fps could be a little lower. also the maxwell cards dont' support the latest dp 1.4. If you gonna get a monitor get one that does 120Hz native don't get a 60Hz monitor that has to be oced to 100Hz that is not the same thing. even your link shows the 980 falls short of 60fps but I didnt' have time to check the test bench they use and other details to tell you the problems there. |

Thanks! From what I read, I agree about getting one that does 120 Hz natively. I don't want to get into overclocking a monitor. Seems like too much tinkering (for me).

Makes sense. I know I'm getting off topic, but I really wonder how I would like the wide screen experience. I could see it being excellent in some circumstances but cumbersome in others. A lot of reviewers seem to REALLY love it.

If you are in hurry ok but if ou are not then take your time and see whats what, for example we were expecting the titan x pascal to be a huge monster and right now its disappointment based on our expectations.

Hmm just to clarify- I'm going to pick up the monitor relatively soon... Hopefully use the 980 for another year or so.
I think I can live with playing at 50 or so fps with graphics on ultra (higher if I turn them down a bit) on the newest games. |

As long as you know what you are getting into, all we do here is provide the facts so that you guys know them.
Then you make up your mind and go with what makes you happy. So if that is what makes you happy and works for you then that is the right thing to do |

I got the Acer Predator X34 ultrawide with Gsync. It is amazing! Just make sure you go through the settings and everything because it will not look as good until you do.
It is not quite 4k resolution so it will be easier for your gpu and the refresh rate will over clock up to 100 though 60 is the default. I have had no problems using the overclock setting on mine so 100 is pretty amazing. I was not happy at first due to the blacks not looking so good but once I went through the settings and tweaked I got it to look almost perfect. I would definitely recommend this thing. This is the one i bought: Acer X34 Edited by Richieboy67 - 04 Aug 2016 at 12:24pm |

I know calibration is different for everybody, but can you post the things you changed and what you changed them to so others can benefit from a base at least?

After what I've been reading about the Predator, Acer X34, I think that's what I want. I'm going to sleep on it for a bit and see if I can wait for a sale. But that's what I'm planning on going with. (personally think the Asus equivalent looks sort of corny, and I see no advantages)

Use the dp cable it comes with, you have to go with whatever the monitor supports so if it supports dp 1.2 then that is what you have to get

Makes sense. My initial concern was that the monitor would not ship with a cable, and I'd be left trying to drive to the nearby BestBuy w/ my fingers crossed for the weekend. I think this monitor supports 1.2
As an aside, if everything goes as planned I'll be using this monitor for work this weekend, running VMware. We'll see how that goes... |

I wonder how much tweaking I will need to do. Just turn up the resolution as far as it will go in vmware?

In vmware, I would go with what is listed as the native res, which is the same outside of vmware tho the settings maybe different based on the drivers used in vmware.
