Anyone have some cleaning tips for their computer? DS went through a lot of trouble making sure my Hailstorm 2 was nice and beautifully built, so I've been opening it up once a month and blowing out the dust and cleaning the air filters. I bought an electric duster and hit everything I can, but I've noticed that a fine later of dust still settles on certain components, like the backs of my video cards, and won't move even with a hard blast of air, and I'm hesitant to wipe them down due to risk of ESD.

I personally just use canned air on the electronics and wipe down the outside of the case.   Some suggest cotton swabs and alcohol for the stuck on dust, but , for me, the less you touch the less chance of zapping anything.

In field service we used a vacuum for the circuit boards and emf cage they sat in but the vacuum had a grounding lug on the end of the hose for a grounding strap.   Even then, I only did the cards on rare occasions.

I've seen too many electronic components get smoked by even recommended precautions.

Just me.

> Filters every two weeks or so
> Qtips to the fan blades every couple of months
> Blow out case, power supply every couple of months with canned air. To prevent any extra work on the fans- I hold the fan blades down
Made the mistake of tilting the can once and sprayed all sorts of chemicals on the vid card, which died a week later- Draw your own conclusions

I use a little air compressor for computer cleaning, works really well. I clean out once a month from top to bottom. Like gddead said, make sure you either hold the fans or i put a little plastic tube which holds it for me. I didn't do that on a older computer and watched the fan spin right out of place.

I got one of these https://goo.gl/n2H6Hd and despite being pretty pricey I think it was worth the price. Canned air runs our really fast and doesn't blow as hard as it gets colder. Does anyone know if there's some safe static free wipes or something?

I got this idea from a technician friend. According to him, You can loose any dust particles and dirt by using a compressed air to blow everything out.

Check out this thread for a view of the electric duster that ArkansasWoman turned us all on to.

It's a fantastic little machine and mine has already paid for itself twice.

ok you guys pulled me in and had to order the Datavac. The air can approach has always made me nervous with the potential thermal shock, fluid, etc.

Cool beans (literally!)... One small caveat, though, if you have small children or easily startled animals. This little vacuum/blower is a bit loud.
