Topic: CONFIGURATION ADVICE Posted: 30 Jul 2012 at 1:59pm |
I'm looking for some input on the
configuration shown below. I want a killer gaming machine that can be used for
home office work too. I currently own an Alienware that is 3 years old. My
budget is rather high based on this configuration. After reading some of the
other posts I may be guilty of a little overkill and would appreciate any input
on where I'm wasting money or making a good investment. I currently use 2
monitors but have no interest in 3D. The x79 plateform is more suited for people with quad sli setups or if they do heavy video rendering etc you can get a quality gaming machine for far under your budget

Hello Rick2197,
I personally would lower the memory speed to 1600MHz. It will be more stable and you wont loose performance. I also like the Corsair memory. Nice choice. DS will tell you that with the case you have chosen, and the one GTX690, you will not need the stage 4 cooling. The 240MMRAD will work great and the airflow will be more than enough to keep the CPU comfortable. It would not be my choice to overclock that video card since it is so great as is. It is tops. I'm not by any means a expert and you will get great advice to follow from others with more wisdom but that setup is very similar to mine and it KICKS ASS!. Not one single issue and it runs cool as it can be. Thanks, Shot

Yeah I would look at the z77 will sli 680s or 670s if your not going full liquid cooling I would not use the hailstorm, a beautiful case is the cosmos 2 look for it under spec ops section, that would be a sweet case with full watercooling or air cooling its a beauty

Hi RICK2197... Here's my thoughts and a config to check out, kind of a combo of what was said and my spin.
Config # 713948 Cost $ 3542 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master 942 HAF X Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 3770K 3.50 GHz (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) (Requires Z77 Motherboard) Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE (Intel Z77 Chipset) (Higher Overclocks and Unique Wi-Fi Features) System Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1050W Corsair Pro Silver 1050HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (180GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: 520 Series) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (Model: Black Edition) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: ASUS Blu-Ray Player/DVD Writer (Play Blu-Ray and Burn DVDs) (Model: BC-12B1ST) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2GB (Includes PhysX) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 Extreme Performance H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 2: Overclock CPU 4.5GHz to 4.8GHz (Requires Pro/Deluxe/Sabertooth Motherboard) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student (Full Retail Box Packaging) Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty This gives you the same gaming performance for $1800 less. The HafX case is tops for air cooled systems and doesn't need the noisy Zalman fan upgrade and has built in hot-swap bays. Also doesn't need the noise suppression package. The Z77 mobo is all gaming needs. If you plan on going to a third graphics card, then the X79 would be needed, but that didn't seem to be an issue. The 1050HX is great for sli. For tops in dependability I put in the Noctua D14 cooler. The stage 4 cooler you listed is also very good, just has more plumbing to worry about. Just another way to go. Good Luck. Hi Rick,
That is a solid build from bprat22 with air cooling. If you want to stick with the Hailstorm case here is a LC system using the Hailstorm. You also should consider increasing the warranty. The 3 year warranty only gives you 1 year of parts coverage.
