Budget:
$2,200

Expectations:
Game rig for the next few years. Trying to decide between 2x SLI Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 1GB or the GTX 580 1.5GB in this config. I suppose in 6-8 months I could buy a second GTX 580 1.5GB and SLI those.

I want this box to last if I am going to pay a premium price for a machine ;)

Usage:
Games, Skyrim, WoW, Dragon Age 2 etc.

Saved Ticket #: Config 683117

This will be my first bought machine, normally I build my own.

Specifications:

EDIT (REMOVED LIST TO SAVE SPACE - BOUGHT SPEC DOWN BELOW look up config # above if interested.)

Hi Krav_ Mind....Welcome to the forums.

You didn't mention monitor size or resolution so this assumes a 23" monitor or less at 1920x1080 resolution.

For your budget I would recommend looking at the ODE V2 Level 4.  For less money you'd get a better case with larger fans and a fan on top where it is needed the most.

Edit...with the H100 cooler you would have fans on top with both builds

The cpu is the i7-3770k which is better.

It has the gtx680, much better than the gtx 580  which is expensive for what you get.  The ODE mobo can't sli but for what you mentioned sli is not needed.

If you wanted to keep the option of sli then we can still show you a better build, but more money, but still less than adding a 580 later on.

See what you think and good luckBig%20Smile

Thanks for the welcome! I want to counterpoint your suggestions with what I am thinking. This is how I learn things ;)

Yes correct 23" monitor at 1920x1080.

The Slade has room for 2 fan ports at the top, I would assume that that is where the H100 Liquid CPU Cooler would go and vent out of the top of the case.

As I understand the main diff between the i5 and the i7 CPU is threading that will not matter to me as a gamer as I don't do 3D CAD/modeling and/or Trans-coding of media. So the only difference is 100 MHz and when its overclocked that really is debatable.

The GTX 580 can be SLI in this setup for upgrade in the future where I wont have that option on the ODE.

The motherboard of the ODE also doesn't support wireless and bluetooth. Which I prefer to use for my network and headset.

I tell ya there has been more than 20 times I got up from my desk and had my head yanked due to wired headsets heh.

Also, and this is purely my aesthetic taste I don't like white rigs. If the ODE only came in black

Great thing for me to think about bprat22, please keep the suggestions coming!

You are right on all your points.

I did edit my post with the H100 mounted to the top.   I didn't know you wanted Wifi and if you can't feel the loveBig%20Smile for a white case then ODE is out.

If you put sli 580 in that case I think you'd end up adding side fans to deal with the heat.  They do throw lots of heat.

EDIT.....How about the HafX or 500R case?  They have side fans to blow right on the cards.

I think a better way to go is keep your mobo and go gtx680.  Great performance especially for what you play and much better thermals. Plus for sli 580's you might want to up the psu to 1050HX.  800W might make it but doesn't give alot of headroom.

For purely gaming the cpu is fine.

Just my thoughts.

Yes, saw your edit. =)

Yes, sorry I didn't mention why that motherboard was more attractive to me.

I would need to find a way to chop about $300-400 off the build to go for the GTX 680 card and a larger PSU, I am building enough wife aggro with the $2.3k.

The Slade does have side fans available if you wire them up. I cant post links here but there is a good Corsair Obsidian 550D you-tube video from Corsair that goes over these.

I can add the larger power and second GTX 580 card next year if I start to have performance issues. I find that will be unlikely (we can only hope!). Besides my budget will reset after some months.

I really want to add the bigger card, but budget isn't going to allow it unless I build it myself. This time I really want to have pro's build and support it instead of myself.

Thank you for your thoughts!

Another thought...There is rumor that the 580's have stopped in production.  When the ones in stock get depleted, that's it.   I'm not 100% but something to check on just in case.  have you considered the 570.  Not much less performance in sli than 580 with gaming at your resolution.  Of course, they might vanish too.
Supposedly, and we know how that goes, more Kepler cards comparable to the 570/580  are out soon.  newer cards with longer supprt.

I've built in the past too, and last year decided the same route.  I like the extended 5 year labor/3year parts over what I had before.   One source for troubleshooting and parts replacement.

Best of luck and keep us postedBig%20Smile

Hi Frav_Mind
I have also read reports that the GTX 580 is no longer in production.

I did notice one thing about your build.  You have an HDD for the the operating System drive an a SDD for the data drive.  Normally it's recommended the other way around.  Any reason for the switch?

"There is rumor that the 580's have stopped in production."

I will look into that and the 570's! Thanks for the heads up!

As for the SSD vs HDD swap - that is an oops and I will correct that.

Thank you.

Edit: Added new ticket and build list

Ticket Number: 683234

EDIT: Removed build list.

Hi everyone,

I think the dual rads on the H100 are set up by DS so the fans blow into the case, not out. This gives them cooler air to cool the CPU. At least this is how they did it at the beginning. Maybe someone who has the H100 can tell us how theirs is set up and when they got it?

The reason they built the Aventum with the rads at the bottom was so they could use outside air for cooling.
