Topic: Couple questons Posted: 12 Nov 2017 at 1:42pm |
I have a couple things that have just started happening kind of out of the blue.
First, lately when I go to shutdown/restart the reboot stops on a screen that says that I need to place boot software in the drive. The only way to get out of this is to shut the computer down and start it up again. I have also had to reset the boot drive to the SSD, some how it got set to the optical drive. But the computer boots normally from a cold boot, exception below. Second, I am getting a pop up window when I cold boot my computer that is labeled Intel Max Turbo Boost Technology 3.0 and there is an Icon for it in the system tray. I uninstalled it a couple days ago as I don't know what that is nor can I get ANY part of it to work; but it has reappeared again. Is any of this connected with the latest W10 updates. Anyone else having anything like this happening? Thanks Arne |

Is your boot drive going bad? Clone it just incase, but it looks like yiur boot sector is getting corrupt.
Intel turbo boost is part of your intel processor's function. I would keep it and leave it alone if you are not familiar with it. Im sure there is somewhere in the app to not get notifications. |

Thanks for the response. If there is an option to drop the notices, I can't find it.
7 Month old Bolt 3 with 2 EVO one terabyte SSDs. NO clue what "cloning" a drive is or how to do it. Sorry, just an old guy with a better computer than skills. Arne |

Well turbo boost is least of our problems so let's leave that for now.
So every time you reboot you get a message saying that boot drive can't be found, please insert/connect boot drive? If so that is boot priority in the bios, choosing which drive to boot from at boot up is not the same as setting boot priority in the bios, i suspect you are doing the former but thinking you are doing the ladder. Probably. F2 during boot up gives what I thought was the BIOS. I've changed that from the optical to the SSD a couple times. Seemed to work for a cold boot but not for a restart. The restart message comes up in the old "dot matrix" style like we had 30 years ago under the original dos and monochrome monitors.

F2 just lets you choose for that bootup, keep hitting delete, go into bios and there choose os drive as first first boot for boot priority.

OK, Hitting DEL during cold boot puts me to the same place as F2; ASRock UEFI.
There I have the boot SSD as the first drive, the BD optical is the second and the second SSD doesn't show up at all. I presume that is correct as the second SSD is not a boot drive. There is just too much "stuff" there that I don't understand and am reluctant to mess with. The BD drive shows up in a couple other places in the UFEI but there is no understandable (to me) selections to be made. So far, no changes made. More background, when I go to shut down the computer, I get a "app running " which prevents shutdown unless forced. OR if I cancel out, then go back to shutdown, that message is gone and shut down happens normally. Whatever the "app" is doesn't show up in the task manager. Also on initial start up, the computer fans and lights come on momentarily then turn off for a couple seconds then starts again normally. Is the "stutter step" normal? It SEEMS that the computer runs pretty much normally AFTER boot up and AFTER I have turned off the Intel turboboost tech 3.0 window that appears. Do I just live with it? Thanks Arne |

If the "UEFI" is the BIOS, yes, that is what I did.

Ok well first let me ask you and be sure when you answer,
Which drive has your os on it? 850 or the 960? The 960 is your fastest and is should be on it, but let me know Edited by DST4ME - 16 Nov 2017 at 10:58am |

Sorry, no clue. Until I started looking at the UEFI I didn't even know I had a 960. Thought I had 2 850 EVOs. Don't even know the difference or how to find out. Also, my order number is currently lost so I can't even find the "parts" list for the order

Ok qe could find out first but in true DST4ME fashion let's take a shortcut.
Im not familiar with asrock, not sure if boot manager needs to be enabled under tools but let's come back to that. Please change boot drives under "boot" and set 960 as boot priority and see if boot problem is fixed Edited by DST4ME - 16 Nov 2017 at 11:16am |

Seems that the "shutdown restart" is working again. First cold boot after change to 960 still gave the Intel turbo 3.0 box, second cold boot did not. here's the last picture of the change to 960.

As far as the picture focus, the first attempt was in Imgur and I had reduced the resolution to the "web page" which I think "de-focused" the pictures. Postimage seems to be more user friendly, thanks.

Nice so problem one solved.
I would only have cd/dvd and 960 listed for boot. Ok now to turbo boost, so you don't want to use turbo boost or you just don't want to see the prompt? |

Yes, just recently have gotten that pop up box at the end of the boot sequence. I can easily close it out but that was the thing that started all this. Just a new "thing" that I hadn't seen before. It is really no big deal but as I said, the flag that lead to this.

Uncheck "enable" and "foreground app had priority"
And see if it still comes up |
