Ethernet Port issue?

So, I have my PC connected to the Ethernet port. Everything was working fine for the 8 months I've had my DS. I left the computer for about 35 minutes, came back, there was no connections to be found.

I can plug my laptop into the cord, and it works fine.

Not sure if its the Ethernet port, or something else? Cant even get an IP address. the IPv4 and 6 are both set up to auto obtain.

Did something malfunction, or am I missing something?

Your computer "leases" the IP address connection for a certain amount of time. Depending on your router this can be 1 hour - 4 hours. At the expiration windows will try to renew the lease. Often this fails due to a 'timeout' ( takes to long ). If it fails, windows will assign a temporary IP address and continue to try to obtain a new 'lease'. If the connection is wireless almost any interruption in the signal during this process can terminate the connection (again a timeout).

Generally re-starting the PC will clear this as it obtains a new lease and IP connection.

If not re-post here with the OS (win7 or win8.1), using built in internet or an add-on card, what brand and type of router (docsys2 or 3), what type of internet and who is the carrier?

Did you try resetting the router and restarting the computer?

I did restart the PC several times, along w/ the router. Like I said, when I plug the Ethernet cord into one of our laptops, I get the Ethernet light to turn on on the router, and the signal goes to non-wifi. But when I plug it back into the PC, I get no Ethernet light, and no signal. Nor does it have any connections even available.

I also checked the Realtek PCIe BGE Family Controller in the Network Adapters. It tells me its working fine.

Im using Win8.1, with the default internet card. I have ATT DSL and use a 2WIRE router.

A couple of things to try are......do a System Restore to a point earlier than the problem in case an update, etc corrupted something and....in Device Manager, right click the Realtek device, uninstall, reboot and let Windows re-install the driver.

Is there anything in event viewer?

Along with what Bprat suggested, check devices and printers in control panel and see if your router shows there. If it does, uninstall it and let windows find it and reinstall drivers.

Go ahead and restart the router. Asdl can be a fickle thing.

Generally ASDL has a filter at the phone jack. Does the phone at this jack work ok? (no whine or background noise)

If none of this works:
First call the phone co and have them check the line and signal then have THEM reset the router from their end.

Last resort (or maybe the first ) call DS and see if they have a way to check it, maybe with remote connection and a packet sniffer or something.
They may be able to simplify the process and tell if it is the motherboard.

Another thought (since my mind is more clear today).

Look in device manager under network adapters and system devices and see if anything has a ! or ? on it.

Under administrator tools check event viewer to see if anything is there concerning the network adapter or connection.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up calling DS and they had me buy a USB-Ethernet adapter. It was their opinion that the Ethernet port either shorted out or otherwise broke. The LED lights weren't even working.

Kinda sucks that I had to go buy something for a computer that's still under warranty, but I need my computer for work...

When you get the adapter make sure to go into device manager and disable the onboard networking.

Its not like DS made the motherboard. They just got it out a box and plugged in the parts. Sometimes stuff in electronics breaks.
