Topic: Failed Fans Posted: 10 May 2016 at 6:23am |
I have a strange problem that cropped up after a blue screen. I have a Hailstorm from 2013 maxed out with WC , push/pull fans on a upper rad, pull fans forward, a 480mm rear fan, 3 lower pull, 1 lower push. only the lower fans work and respond to hydrolux commands. 1 fan works on the upper push, but the other two just sit there. the three pull on top flash the blue LED on power up, but won't spin up. all fans spin by hand easily so no bearing issues. they are all clean as a whistle! The Power supply fan will respond to the corsair controls and I can manually control its speed, but all else nada. connectors look OK, traced back to the Power supply, checked the headers and all are pushed in fully. I am stumped.
Help! |

I don't understand fully what's what, but in general, if you have a couple of fans not working, swap plugs with known good fans to see if fans still don't work. Another words, unplug the bad fan, and plug it in where a good fan works. If it still doesn't work, then a bad fan.
If you have the fans plugged into the DS fan/temp Control Board its possible one of the IC drivers on the board are bad, if nothing works in that header. Just a matter of swapping the leads around to see if the fans work anywhere. Good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 10 May 2016 at 7:48am |

I thought of that, trying the leads to know good headers. The question is, which header on the motherboard is safe to use? They are all 4 pin and the leads are three. I find it strange that ten fans all quit, three on a four fan block. Luck I guess. Are any fan connectors turned off in the bios?

You can plug 3 pin connectors into 4 pin headers. They're keyed so you can't mess it up. You just don't get PWM, pulse width modulation, control of the fans. And vice versa.
Where are the fans plugged into? Is it the DS Control board? If a number of fans stopped working all at once, its most likely whatever they're plugged into. If it happened right after a BSOD, then the board the fans plug into going bad could have triggered the BSOD. Speculation of course. |

All the fans go to two Digital Storm boards. I have yet to cut the tye wraps and trace them back, but all only one fan header on the motherboard is used. This is the third time I have had major problems with this system. Two return already, and this in the third year of ownership. Not usual is it?

My guess is that their board has died. If its the one I'm thinking then there should be 4 pin molex power connectors to the board from the psu. Just make sure they're seated. Probably are because its not a new build.
Best bet, just to isolate the problem, is to take a couple of the fans to the DS board and plug them into the mobo or directly to a 4 pin molex from the psu, which might need a 3 to 4 pin pass through connector. Amazon has them. Try the mobo header since its right there. Gonna have to cut the ty-wraps and mess up the clean look. If you have a ac/dc multi meter then it makes life easier. Just check 12vdc IN at the Molex and again OUT at the fan headers or fan plug itself. IN but no OUT is a bad board. Edited by bprat22 - 10 May 2016 at 9:44am |

Bullseye. It has a four pin header type cable that traces back to a converter on the PSU. Time to start snipping very carefully and testing the fan groups, it one or two work I assume the board has failed. Does a water cooled system have fan controls turned off in the bios? I remember the cpu fan giving me grief after the bios went back to default. And I had to turn the monitoring off. I guess I can check that as well as that is an easy plug to get to.

The cpu_fan header on the mobo isn't turned off in Bios but is set to Ignore or some such terminology, so you don't get cpu fan errors because nothing is plugged into it. Air cooled coolers use the header but not water.

I switched out one of the fan connectors from the Digital Storm multi fan boards to an open fan header on the motherboard and it started up. There are two boards with five connections each for fans, both have failed evidently. Alex agreed to send me two replacement boards at a discount to fix the problem. Yay!
