Hi Guys,
First post here.. just found this place a week ago and I can safely say I will never be getting another Dell! Love the customization of this site! At any rate, I own the Adobe CS4 Collection (soon to upgrade to CS5), and would like to upgrade my editing computer. I'll post what I've got so far. Keep in mind, I really can not go over ~$2200 unless it is for very, very good reason. I will probably hold out til Sandy Bridge comes out to make my final decision. you got a ticket number for that? for your use you can go with haf 932.
go with corsair 750w psu, its got its own 5 year warranty. you understand that the bluray player don't burn bluray or dvd right? just double checking. you don't want Asetek, you want Noctua NH-U12P forget the oc on the gpu, you won't notice it. windows tweak will make no difference what so ever in apps and game speeds. I think you should wait for sandybridge, its speed and prices are gonna be different, its performance for your kinda use is suppose to be better. I make this config, came to $2141 it has a ssd, set up is like this: HDD1 = fast small drive: os/apps/games HDD2 = regular large drive: media/personal/work file storage again wait for SB, which this is not, but its just a config for us to discuss Ticket Number: 477295 Edited by DST4ME - 11 Jan 2011 at 1:31am |

Here is my new rig with the Sandy Bridge processor. It looks like the most ram I can get is 8gb -- is this going to be ok? And its not tri channel ram, will that be a big difference? I'm thinking of opting with the 300 GB raptor drive instead of the (2) 500GB in a raid 0... is this a good idea? |

raptor cost too much. I would go with caviar black edition instead
SB will not beat teh 6 Core cpu I picked for you. when you pick power supply herem choose the corsair, it has a 5 year warranty and its not a rebranded clone. if you read my previous post I mentioned that you don't want asetek, its not real liquid cooling adn its performance is the same as Noctua hope that helps, if you have anymore questions let me know. |

The configuration you built for me only seems to have 4 cores, not 6. Or am I mistaken?
And isn't Sandy Bridge supposed to be a step up from what I had before? And would the (2) 500 GB drives in a RAID 0 be better than the Caviar? Does the 1TB Caviar Black edition offer any extra benefits from other drives? Thank you! |

It should have been the 970 six core, I apologize.
the 500GB HDDs are 16MB cache, the caviar black has 64MB cache, its faster then a single and its one card instead of raid. Tho the raid will have better speed with large files if I'm not mistaken. Edited by DST4ME - 11 Jan 2011 at 7:37pm |

The Sandy Bridge, from what I hear is just not as fast as the i7 950. The six core processor is out of the question... way too expensive for my budget. As well, the 1 TB WD Caviar Black edition with a 64 mb cache... the cache size seems to make no discernible difference when you go above 16mb from bench marks I've read about. The current RAID 0, 2 x 500gb setup I have seems to work very quickly from what I've read, but this is the one part of my configuration that I'm still torn about. Should I splurge for the single, low capacity raptor drive, or go with a really low capacity SSD drive. Any thoughts? |

The current sandy bridge CPUs are all the low end models. I've heard from too many people that the existing high end i7's are much better than the current Sandy Bridges.
Do you have any info to support your claim? I'd like to know why if so. |

it is no claim, it is fact. memory performance is much better with SB. clock for clock speed SB is appx. 18% faster, and it will overclock 15% higher on average. and is cheaper.
The only old platform CPU's that compete with SB are the 6 cores, and they are a lot more $$, and they get beat by SB on some apps, only the apps that will use all 12 threads of the 6 cores will show the performance advantage for the old platforms.

Will the fact that I will not be getting tri channel ram be a problem?
And I will only be able to get up to 8gb... which I know can be more if I call in... |

I will be able to post benchmarks tomorrow on my SB, but 21-22Gb of RAM bandwidth is about max on a 6 core 980x, and the SB it hitting 25-27Gb of RAM bandwidth.

If the six core is out of the question then go with 2600K for sure.
for HDD setup best setup is: HDD1 = fast small drive: os/apps/games HDD2 = regular large drive: media/personal/work file storage in other words, ssd for HDD1 and a 500GB or 1TB for HDD2. |

but you have HHD 1 as a slow drive and HDD 2 nearly twice as fast.

Is there a reason why I am capped out at 8gb of ram when I go with the sandy bridge processor?

Standard RAM is 2Gb per stick.. SB has 4 RAM slots. there is 4Gb sticks, and they have a price per Gb very close to the same as the lower density 2Gb sticks, Digital Storm just does not have them a stock item, yet
