Hi,
I have managed to screw up my DS computer while uninstalling the latest Firefox update. I did it directly from the programs page instead of going to Mozilla and now I have no access at all to the internet and keep getting "Couldn't load XPCOM." message when I try to open Firefox. When I tried to reinstall it I got "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded." I have W7Ultimate and I'm stumped (don't know much about this) Right now I am using an old laptop. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Can you use another browser like IE? If so, try that and if it still blocks you... disable your virus protection, go to IE Tool, Options, Security and select Advanced or Change settings(something like that), and look for the download drop down and Enable all. If that works download Firefox.
If no internet at all for whatever reason, download Firefox with your laptop, save to mem stick and load it in the desktop. No load XPcom probably means a file like a .dll is missing. Good luck. |

Hi bpratt22,
Thanks a lot for answering. I tried what you say and I am able to use IE and get to Mozilla.org but when I try to download it says "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded." I use MS Essentials and Win Firewall and all are off. I can't even enter DS with IE. Something about cookies and/or IP addresses. As to your suggestion of downloading into a stick, my laptop is a MacBook, can I download into an external hdd and then connect back to the pc w/out ruining something more? I already screwed up enough. Thanks. Edited by hoserator - 05 Sep 2015 at 7:00am |

Not sure but I don't think the Mac files would work on the Windows without an emulator, etc.
Did you go to IE, or any browser , the Tools menu, Options, Security and and select Custom or whatever is there and Enable File Download? It should just be a permissions thing. Try Chrome if you have it. Edited by bprat22 - 05 Sep 2015 at 7:15am |

Hi bpratt,
SUCCESS. That last one (file download enable) was the winner. Much going your way. I hope someday I can reciprocate. (not with computer troubleshooting as you can surmise) I am like a little kid with a new toy. Thank you for your giving. |

Awesome, hoserator.
Always my pleasure. Yeah, for some reason IE and others default at disable download. Don't know why. Mine has always defaulted at Enable. Hope the new install works out. |

Hi,
I am afraid I'm the culprit. When I get a new pc I go in and put all the settings I can find so that nothing comes in. I wasn't liking the latest from Mozilla (40.3, ) but I am not touching a thing about it. I am even afraid of turning the pc off. This system has been operating great all year. The more problems you create, the more proficient you become fixing them. DS will be hiring you for weekend tech support pretty soon.
Congrats on a great running DS rig. |
