Topic: Fixed problem, but questions Posted: 22 Feb 2015 at 7:18am |
Good morning all,
So I got back from work last night, computer had hibernated while I was gone. Decided I'd just leave it until morning. Fast forward to an hour or so ago, and I woke up the rig, but then it just went into a cycle of turning off and back on repeatedly, with no monitor activity. I turned it off, then back on, but again, no monitor activity. Ultimately read online to remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard, put it back in, and try again. It worked! Felt good to dig around in the computer, albeit slightly stressful about ruining something. Upon booting, it stopped at the Bios screen, telling me there was a problem with the CPU fan. I went into the settings, didn't want to change anything for fear of ruining the work DS did in setting it up for me (overclock, etc), and then it booted up just fine. My question to you all is, what could cause this issue in the first place? Should I be concerned? I'm monitoring temps in the control center, it looks like the CPU is holding steady around 77° F. Is this normal? Edit: and since posting with WoW running, it has risen to 80. Roughly 1 degree every 2 minutes. I imagine this is minor, but nervous nonetheless. I feel like I've never seen my CPU even hit 80 >.> Thanks! Edited by Eggy - 22 Feb 2015 at 7:27am |

HI Eggy.... With your water cooling, the cpu_fan header on the mobo above the cpu isn't used. If no fan is plugged in there then the Bios thinks you lost the cpu cooling fan.
Go into Bios and under Advanced screen and Monitor tab, I believe, look for CPU FAN drop down and set to Ignore or something similar. Your mobo manual will help if I'm a bit off. Do you still have your overclock? When resetting CMOS, the Bios will reset to Default and usually drops the DS oc. Under Tools tab in Bios, again check the manual, will be the OC Profiles that DS saved. Restoring that should also set the cpu fan back to ignore. Check the oc first with cpu-z or whatever you use. Hope this helps. |

So this is what I'm seeing in cpu-z? Forgive me, I'm not sure how to determine if the OC is there. Is that the "multiplier" down in the clocks section? |

Your temps......Do you mean 77-80 F or C. Just read the Centigrade value. Ignore the Fahrenheit.

I can't open that. In the CPU-Z screen, the lower left has the Core Speed in Mhz. When the cpu is stressed, that figure to go to, for example, 4400Mhz, if your oc is 4.4Ghz.

Farenheit. Pulled up Afterburner - CPU temps are ~10-16 centigrade depending on the core.

Got the DS profile loaded, CPU-Z is showing the difference now. Thanks as always, bprat!

My pleasure.
The fan fault is also gone? Nice job, Eggy. |

So, what, if anything specifically, typically causes the no signal issue? Tried different ports, unplugged power cables, etc, so I'm not sure what the other fix aside from the battery would have been.

Can't say for sure, but I never recommend sleep or hibernate. Lots of people use it with zero problems and others just can't use it. You got me.
Instead of the CMOS reset, sometimes unplugging the rig from the wall, holding in the front panel power on button for 10-15 seconds, will clear any faults floating around. |

Oops, missed that other one - yes, no error messages at the bios screen regarding the fan, so all seems to be well. CPU-Z shows ~4.4 clock, and the settings in the bios showed that stuff as well.
Yeah, I don't typically use hibernate or sleep, I guess I just never changed that setting. Fixed now |

Not that my computer will ever show up, as I have been waiting 6 weeks for it, but I also chose the 5930k, and wondered what you specified for OC on your purchase?
I would be very pleased if I get 4.4 Ghz with mine |

Until Eggy comes back..... I believe he selected stage 2 oc and DS got it to 4.5 or so.
But, he can say for sure. |

I wonder what they do different on a stage 2 overclock? Like stage 1, is no change to voltage, and stage 2 they increase voltage and perhaps other things? It would be nice to know more about the difference. I have it down for stage 1, as it was a default. I can certainly raise voltage myself and try for more. but I don't know anything fancier than a simple voltage boost |

I can't say exactly what they do, but even at 4.4 there is a vcore increase, probably around 1.3. DS goes for a modest oc because the difference between 4.4 and 4.6 , for example , is little real world difference. With water cooling the added heat from a higher vcore can be better handled, but higher vcore is still more stress on the chip. Voltage does kill.

We do minor voltage changes on Stage 1, but it's much more aggressive on Stage 2. However, please note, we don't push the units too hard on overclocks.

Sorry for the delayed response Michael, woes of "busy season".
I requested/paid for the stage 2 overclock. As Alex said, while the stage 2 is much more aggressive, they don't try to push the limits. I wound up with roughly a 4.5ghz speed after the overclock. Considering how easy it is to ruin a processor with OC'ing, I'm perfectly happy with 4.5. Stock clock is 3.5 for the 5930k I believe, so an extra 1.0 on top of that is absolutely acceptable in my book. I'd much rather a stable 4.5 than a push for 4.7 which could ultimately ruin the component. If you selected Stage 2, I'm sure they could get you to 4.4 at least. And I think you're going to be very happy with the result

If they are not doing anything too fancy, I should be able to overclock it to roughly the same level they would on stage 2. Will be curious to know what clock I get for level 1 |

From past posts, an oc of about 4.3 and 4.4 is typical for stage 1. The other thing is, if you oc it yourself and have issues or cause a problem, DS warranty won't cover it. Having them oc it gives you their warranty and support for the added money. But, check with them because I remember this from a year or two back.

What bprat said. If you're planning on OC'ing the chip anyway, doesn't make much sense to pay for them to do it in the first place, especially since you may void the warranty by playing with it.
