Topic: New CoffeeLake Machine Posted: 05 Oct 2017 at 3:12pm |
Budget:
$5,000 Expectations: This machine will primarily be used for gaming, but will also be used as a general purpose PC. It is not being used for graphic design, music composition, etc. I would like the machine to handle 4K gaming on two 27+ inch monitors or one 34+ inch monitor at a good framerate. Usage: 4K gaming; VR; streaming; general productivity Special Needs: My main questions are: (1) what is the best motherboard to get for this machine? I want the best Z370 motherboard available, but probably don't need 4 PCI-E lanes. (2) Is the 850W EVGA SuperNova PS sufficient? Should I opt for the 1000W Corsair HX1000i? What if I decide to go with 2 GTX 1080 Ti's in SLI? What PS is best then? (3) I am not too familiar with liquid cooling. Thoughts on the different Corsair options? Should I go with GPU cooling? 1. depends on your needs, usb/sata/pci/oc
2. depends on system specs, for one gpu the 850w is good for sli the more headroom the better so hx1000w imho is the way to go. 3. the main rule about lc is: Prepare to work on lc system, from replacing aio to fixing leaks on a real loop. Not saying it happens to all but be prepared to work on it one way or another. the h115 has a 5 year warranty I think, it will do fine for these cpus, unless you want to do extreme oc, in which case you need a better loop, but if you ask us we would tell you not to go extreme on oc unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you want to add gpu to the loop then you are going for a real loop, and thus more possible work but it will keep the system quiet. oc this yourself, to something with light vcore I think a 4.7GHz oc or so I think is possible depending. In keeping with the be ready to work on your lc system, make sure your psu is fully modular just in case you have to switch it, it will be very easy. for 4k I would probably go sli 1080ti Click Image To Go To Configuration Page Edited by DST4ME - 06 Oct 2017 at 1:44am |

I think that I am now leaning towards SLI primarily because I can include two GPUs and still come in under budget. However, I am also leaning towards eventually using either the Acer X35 Predator monitor or the ASUS ROG Swift X35VQ Monitor. In that case, do you think that the current LC (H115i) is sufficient, or do you think LC for the graphics cards is necessary? I don't generally care about noise - within reason. Also, any thoughts on 3000Mhz RAM versus 3200Mhz RAM? I tend to lean towards the Dominator RAM, but I really don't know if the performance increase is noticeable over the the "Digital Storm Performance Series".

You can always add a second gpu yourself its very easy
Those are ultra wide monitors at 200hz if I remember correctly. with stingle 1080ti you will be around 70 - 110 fps, if you want higher fps in ultra wide then sli it is. the h115i is an all in one (aio) cooler for your cpu, it has nothing to do with your monitor choice or gpus. Lc for gpu is not a necessity, its a preference in your case. (remember be prepared to work on lc system if you order one). IF you don't care about noise then don't worry about lc on gpus. Ram speed between 3000Mhz and 3200Mhz is not that important, I like corsair also, go with what you like, just remember there is only a handful of companies that make memory and psu, and most brands like corsair is not one of those. But corsair has good warranty and customer service so that is why I like them. Also like to point out that for gaming you only need a quad core cpu, 6 core is not necessary. Hope all that helps Edited by DST4ME - 05 Oct 2017 at 11:47pm |

suffice it to say that until there have been scaling tests to prove otherwise, speeds over 3000Mhz offer diminishing returns when you trade latency for speed. i expect that to remain the case except in niche cases/situations. gaming not being one of them. i would actually advise more memory (especially with high refresh monitors) rather than faster memory. and i'd equally trade lower ram frequency for tighter sub timings. initial reports im reading say the new mobos are pumping out too much VID just to keep all of the cores boosted. one oc reviewer was having to undervolt the proc by -.09 offset just to keep the non-oc boost under 90C on a 280mm CoolerMaster AIO. he said a 240mm rad wasn't even enough to keep it in the high 70's under load. he expects mobo revisions will address this problem. with a boost of 4.7GHz already there's little room for improvement unless you want to go the route of a custom LC setup.
perhaps Meller can offer his de-lidding services? Edited by db188 - 06 Oct 2017 at 1:24am |

honestly though, the closer you get to 4k and beyond the less the cpu has to do with it. you probably won't see much (if any) difference between a 7700K and this proc at the resolution. it's all about the graphics HP at that rez!

I think that I am leaning towards the Acer x34 Predator monitor for now, and might either add a graphics card or replace the graphics card (and monitor) at some point down the road. I know that that Acer x34 is not a 4K monitor, but it seems like a better value for now.
Here's the new config - any thoughts on things to change? I would stick with the old ram speed
make sure that 850w is modular, for more headroom go with 1000w (for sli) change your Recovery Tools to the one I had picked. rest looks good |

Thanks DST4ME. It seemed like you liked the Corsair RAM, but you think I should go with the "Digital Performance Series"? Do you happen to know who manufactures the DS RAM? I was thinking the same thing about upping the PS to 1000w - good call on that - just in case I add a card later.
I didn't even notice the change to Recovery Tools, so thanks for that. |

The DS ram has been ADATA, which is good. The higher end ram is either for looks or if someone wishes to push its overclock. DS ram is just fine.

Thanks bprat22. I am getting close to finalizing this build. I thought about it again and decided to go ahead with the SLI 1080 Ti's since I know that I will want either the ASUS or Acer 4K 35" monitors when they're released (hopefully this quarter). The newest build is below, so please let me know if you think anything can be improved within my budget range (~$5,000). The main question I have remaining is whether the motherboard that I chose is a good choice. I have done some research and it looks to be a decent choice, but would like to hear what others think.

Build looks real good. You don’t need 32gb ram, 16gb being more than enough. Ram isn’t much more, so up to you, but the savings is a few games.
Your mobo pick is a good choice. Unless the higher end boards have something you need, my choice is always mid price board, not the cheapest or most expensive but middle of the road. The mobo is always the toughest for us to suggest. |

Remember corsair doesn't make their own ram either. Its your choice really cant go wrong either way with ram.
For mobo think about how many pci ports you want, same with USB, does that mobo give you enough usb 2.0/3.0 ports? I have that psu hxi for testing, you will love it Let him keep the ram 32gb bp, he i s doing heavy vr and tho 16gb should be enough, 32 doesn't hurt just in case, what do you think? Yeah, 16gb is plenty for even VR from what I’ve read, but there are cases of poor optimized games already recommending 16 gb. Of course, recommending and actually needing can be different. 32gb is safe and not that much more for his high end rig, so go for it.

as with any build, it's highly recommended to research each component you plan to build with on respectable tech review sites (like Anandtech). they usually break down and give their opinions on the quality of what the underlying tech is for the product under review. |

FYI Do not install Mcafee , instead get a lighter better anti virus like ESET (number 3 on the list) Or any other good light AV. Notice you have a 3 year labor 1 year part warranty Doubt you get free shipping unless there is promo, otherwise everyone asks for it. |

Trigger pulled -
1756753 Now I just need some advice on a 34" ultrawide monitor. I was leaning towards a 4K monitor, but now I think I might opt for the new Alienware ultrawide monitor (AW3418DW). Any thoughts on this monitor vs. the Asus X34 Predator? |
