So, apparently have a serious rig doesn't necessarily make you a better gamer? Whats the secret?

My son cut his gaming teeth on FPS back on the PlayStation I had... I realized that at age 9 or 10 I would never beat him head to head. I had to start being devious and sneaky, never giving a fair fight if I wanted to win. That lasted a few years. Then he caught on.
Now, he's approaching 20 and I don't stand a chance. So, eeekman and bprat gave the right answers. Practice while you are young with lightning reflexes. By the way, the old adage "Old age and treachery beat youth and skill every time" is not true. |

Advancing age is definitely not your friend as a gamer. I play single player so I only have myself to compete with. I just have no chance with younger players.

What a serious rig can do for the older gamer is let us turn on all the bells and whistles in the graphics engine. Then we can look out and marvel at all the wonderful sights and sounds around us...just before we die yet again and turn into a rotting corpse in all that splendor

There was a time, back around the release of Doom in 93 where I seemed to get better as I died 100s of times. This continued strongly on through maybe the retail release of Counter Strike, but then somewhere between there and after Halo 2 I realized that I was dying 100s of times and not getting any better.
That trend in multiplayer continues to this day. I haven't played any single-player traditional FPS in awhile, so I'm not sure how much I've degraded there. Edited by Tidgxor - 22 Feb 2016 at 6:53am |

Well, for myself it did make a big difference. It depends what system you came from really. In my case I was playing on an old laptop with all the quality settings low, on low resolution, and I was still getting on average 15 FPS.
I was losing most of the close combat engagements which I used to win back when I had a "real" computer. So many kills come down snap reactions. And I was just missing by a fraction of a second - that's all it takes. When I got my Vanquish 4 it all turned around. Not only can I run at high quality and at 1920x1080, with FPS easily over 120, most of those close encounters go my way now. The object of war is not to view your own rotting corpse but to make the other bastard view his. Edited by SoCal65 - 25 Feb 2016 at 6:01am |
