My specs are below, I have a Krypton laptop with a GTX 980M graphics card. I was told this computer would be customizable. Someone from customer support a little bit back told me that upgrading to a GTX 980 (no m) would be impossible. Yet I see there are some digital storm laptops with GTX 980 (like the Banshee) as opposed to GTX 980M gpus, so would I be able to get this done?
System Configuration: Chassis Model: Digital Storm Krypton 17.3 Inch Laptop (Model: S:8298) Display: 17.3 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Anti-glare) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 4710MQ (Up to 3.50Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Stock CPU and GPU Thermal Compound Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Storage Drive 1: 120GB Solid State - Samsung 850 EVO Storage Drive 2: 750GB 7200RPM (SATA 3Gb/s) Optical Drive: DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Wireless Card: Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 + Bluetooth 4.0 Graphics Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8GB with NVIDIA Battery Boost + NVIDIA Optimus |

The Krypton does not have the room like the Banshee to accommodate the GTX 980 (DESKTOP) version of the card. The GTX 980 (DESKTOP) is also a power hungry GPU, the Krypton was never designed to run a desktop GPU like that.

I thought they made a GTX 980 specifically for laptops (not M), no?

They do, but it has a much higher heat output as Alex said, and the laptop needs to be designed to 1.......physically hold the card and 2.... be able to dissipate the heat with heat sinks, vapor tubes designed for it. Not much room in a laptop and parts have to be customized to fit and work, unlike a desktop.
The "desktop" 980 isn't a gtx 980 as most know it, but the gpu chip mounted to a reduced in size circuit board. |

As has been said, the Krypton chassis, power supply, etc. are not designed to be able to handle the desktop-equivalent GTX980 designed for laptops. Newer models are, like the DS Banshee and other recent models from other manufacturers. It'll definitely be an option for you when you're ready to upgrade the whole laptop in future. I'm looking forward to that day myself, perhaps when the Nvidia GTX1180, or whatever it might be, comes out. You should have a lot of choice then and prices may also get a bit lower as the tech matures. |
