Topic: Gigabyte X99-SLI Boot Issue with M.2 Posted: 22 Mar 2016 at 3:26pm |
I recently got the Gigabyte X99-SLI motherboard option with a M.2 Solid state drive as the OS/boot drive. Has anyone had issues with booting. If so, what did you do to correct the issue, such as bios settings, etc. Thanks for any help or suggestions you can offer.

are you running with 2 graphics cards, if so, the m.2 slot is between them and it can get really hot. also, m.2 on this board isn't all that good. they've only allocated two pcie 2.0 lanes to the m.2 and as a result speed is only at 10Gb/s.
as to your specific issue, i think we're going to need more specifics on your problem. did DS install the motherboard with the m.2 drive as the OS? or is this a "do it yourself" situation? if you are installing a new system drive, did you follow the all of the steps in the documentation for proper installation? have you checked and rechecked all connections? is the drive properly formatted/partitioned? did the drive ever work as intended? what errors, if any, are being reported? do you get a debug code? are you getting BSODs, crashes, lockups, failure to post, etc.? I am only running one graphics card, and DS installed everything, using the Samsung 950 and even installed the Samsung driver thinking that would help. When the computer starts up when turned on, it will go to a screen saying there was a boot drive failure and then gives options to reset bios settings or enter bios, which if I do and go directly to the boot options and load into the drive, it comes up. Then when installing programs or rebooting, sometimes it will give the drive boot error. No errors are reporting on the drive itself. I even updated to the current bios to see if that would help and it has not.

is this the NVMe drive? you might have to go dl the current driver for it and also make sure the bios setting is for NVMe. are the boot order settings in proper order? do you have additional drives installed? they might be conflicting.
which OS are your running, because i know there are all kinds of hoops you have to jump thru with W7. |

Yes, I believe I found the issue in the bios, it has something to do with the CME setting. I am running Windows 10. I also read that when installing windows that certain settings for the enhanced drives have to be turned on otherwise it will install as a legacy drive and that has found to cause issues.

some boards require CSM (compatible support mode) be turned on.
can you confirm your bios is in UEFI mode? make sure the m.2 pcie 3.0 x4 isn't in "legacy" mode and instead is instead UEFI or EFI. in fact, go thru all of your boot settings/SATA configuration settings and change anything that is in legacy mode to EFI. Edited by db188 - 24 Mar 2016 at 7:58pm |

I tried to turn it on but it must not have been when Windows was installed which I believe it has to be for it to install correctly and be seen as that type of drive, because when I turned that setting on, the drive was visible in the bios but then my OS would start a continuous reboot cycle until I turned it off.

sounds like a clean install is in order. make sure you follow the documentation instructions on installation of the drive as an operating system drive, rather than data drive.

Thanks for all of the help. I have used AMD for years and learning Intel and the newer tech has been interesting with some new terminology and interfaces. I am surprised how much has changed in just the last 5 to 6 years.
I tried a cloning program and put the OS on a SATA drive until I can reformat and reinstall. When I do, I will post the results when I get a chance. Happy Easter! |
