    Posted: 19 Feb 2014 at 5:41pm

Google just announced that it's invited cities in nine metro areas across the US to explore "what it would take" to bring its Google Fiber gigabit internet service to more locations. "People are hungrier than ever for faster Internet, and as a result, cities across America are making speed a priority," Google says. "We've long believed that the Internet’s next chapter will be built on gigabit speeds, so it’s fantastic to see this momentum." Google says up to 34 cities in all could potentially receive Fiber service. The nine metro areas where those cities are located include:

• Atlanta, Georgia
• Charlotte, North Carolina
• Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina
• Nashville, Tennessee
• Phoenix, Arizona
• Portland, Oregon
• Salt Lake City, Utah
• San Antonio, Texas
• San Jose, California

Google's hometown of Mountain View, California is also holding talks about Fiber. The company plans to provide an update by the end of 2014 on which destinations will officially join the list of Fiber cities. "Between now and then, we’ll work closely with each city’s leaders on a joint planning process that will not only map out a Google Fiber network in detail, but also assess what unique local challenges we might face," Google says. That includes studying topography, housing density, and local infrastructure.

Lots of North Carolina love, I'd imagine Duke University has something to do with that, they have always been very tech-driven in regards to infrastructure compared to a lot of other east coast universities.

I honestly figured they were more spread-out on the west coast than they currently are, for example not having Seattle was a surprise to me, I figured Amazon would have *wink, wink, nudge, nudged* their way into having Google implement it there by now. Hahaha

I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon has direct connections.

Yeah, that is a good point actually, I'm not sure where all the NW backbones are, but I imagine Amazon is probably patched right in.

Gah!! It's so close, yet so far away from Hampton Roads, VA! Why, lord... oh why!? I need it here, like now. We house the worlds largest naval base. Support us, google...

I will continue to dream.  I'm sure KY is a LONG way from any gigabit connectivity.

Thankfully every Cox customer will have Gigabit internet available to them by 2017. I'm obviously not going to get Google Fiber any time soon.

This might be one reason why Google isn't inviting Seattle.  Seems there's an issue with the city's "dark fiber."

Which is why it shocks me to see that the San Francisco area has been excluded.

Really?

All those Google employees in and around The City and they don't get Google Fiber at home?  smh
