Topic: GPU upgrade Posted: 09 Jan 2018 at 6:24am |
I have an i7 4930k OCed to 4.2Ghz, 1000 watt PS, Sabertooth X79 MB and 16GB of 1600Mhz Corsair memory with a HAF-X case. I'm currently running SLI 780 ti. Can this system support, without bottle-necking, one of the 1080ti GPUs. Current resolution is 3440x1440. I know a 1070 would probably be fast enough for this, but if I ever upgrade to new system, I don't want to be stuck with a 1070 in case I wanted to go 4k with an SLI setup. thx for suggestions.
Also could someone give their recommendations on which card to get. The only card I'm not interested in is the hybrid one with the stand alone water cooler attached to it that you also have to install in the case somewhere. thx again. |

Your rig can easily support replacing the 780Ti's with a 1080 Ti. If there is any bottle-necking which is hard to say , it being so game dependent, it wouldn't be enough to change anything. Certainly not worth upgrading to a new rig.
I like EVGA and MSI for cards. Asus is also OK in my book. My MSI 970 Gaming 4G with zero rpm fan feature has been quiet, even under load and very dependable. EVGA has the best service but I haven't had to use or researched MSI, so can't compare. |

Thank you.
BTW an added feature with the single card is that I will be able to reclaim my USB 3.0 ports that I had to disable in order to have sufficient PCIe lanes for 960 NVMe card. Looking forwards to that. Doing backups via USB 2.0 sucks. :) Edited by Alci - 09 Jan 2018 at 11:31am |

I have about the same system as yours, but an older CPU and mine took the 1080Ti with no problems.
I got the EVGA GTX 1080 Ti sc because I wanted the dual fans. with the HAF X case there is plenty of cooling available. The GPU fans do not even spin unless I start to stress it a bit. that makes it very quiet. My monitor is a Dell supersharp U3014 at 2560 x 1600 @ 60Hz. Edited by Nomad1970 - 09 Jan 2018 at 5:30pm |

As everyone said 1080 ti will be fine, bottleneck, will be there, i doubt it will nake a noticeable difference, also as bp mentioned it is different from game to game.
In this scenario what i always tell people is this: Get the gpu, if you are not happy then you need a new pc, order the new oc without gpu then put in your 1080ti. And 99% if not 100% of people find they are happy with just the gpu upgrade. |

Thanks again. Looks like I'll be waiting a while for the 1080ti. They're sold out everywhere. That's fine since my current setup is adequate.

The cards currently available are $400-$500 more than I priced them a couple of months ago. I pass for now. :)
