Oh now.. that's not fair.. showing me those numbers when the card still isn't available.

If the GTX970 is 54%, I wonder how far down this would have to go to get to the GTX770 I'm currently using. 40%? 30%? ... lower?

synthetic tests and from one source at that, but wow, i wasn't expecting it to beat either the 980ti or Titan X.  that's a little depressing considering i shelled out almost twice the money per card for 2x980ti's back in October.  i'll still wait for the next gen cards before upgrading.

I feel x3 the pain with my 3 980Ti Strix. I may end up upgrading to the 1080Ti or maybe wait for Volta. I haven't decided yet...

The enthusiast side of me says I'm definitely going 1080 Ti x2, possibly x3 depending on how well nvidia still lets them scale.

Meller - any idea what is entailed to get that verification from NVIDIA for running greater than x2 SLI? Also, I wonder if an existing bridge which does x3 now would work with the new cards...

It does not look like there will be any 3x or 4x config options of the GTX 1080 at this time.

I posted this in another thread:

Wait Just A Minute... So No More 3 & 4-Way SLI?

Correct, NVIDIA no longer recommends 3 or 4 way systems for SLI and places its focus on 2-way SLI only. However, for those of you that do want more than two GPUs, there is a way (albeit complex). However... meet the enthusiast key. While NVIDIA no longer recommends 3 or 4 way systems for SLI, they know that true enthusiasts will not be swayed and in fact some games will continue to deliver great scaling beyond two GPUs. For this class of user they have developed an Enthusiast Key that can be downloaded off of NVIDIA’s website and loaded into an individual’s GPU. This process involves:

1. Run an app locally to generate a signature for your GPU
2. Request an Enthusiast Key from an upcoming NVIDIA Enthusiast Key website
3. Download your key
4. Install your key to unlock the 3 and 4-way function

Full details on the process are available on the NVIDIA Enthusiast Key website, which will be available at the time GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs are available in users’ hands.

It seems like the older SLI bridges are compatible with the new cards. However, they will not run in the high bandwidth ("HB") configuration when doing so. This will limit the amount of data over the SLI bridge and force some to go through the PCIe connectors, which has a host of issues that causes a lot of latency.

Hey - thanks for that info!! So the high bandwidth bridge comes from where? I'm assuming it is another purchase from NVIDIA? Also, I'm curious to see how that request for a Key works. It may just be better for me to go with x2 1080 TIs if I do upgrade and not just wait for Volta. Although at this point, it doesn't make much sense to even put thought into it as that's a ways down the road...

I'm guessing because DS doesn't want to register each computer for a key to enable 3 and 4 way for the 1080?

If DS won't do it, and you didn't get watercooling, the process is pretty easy to enable 3 way and 4 way. And People like JayzTwoCents have verified that there will be high bandwidth bridges for greater than 2 way from the launch of 1080. It's not something we'll have to wait for.

I kind of agree Dax. We won't see Volta until (probably) 2018) assuming we have no delays with HBM2. Investing in a couple of Ti class 1080's I think is the best option. I'm going to wait and see how nvidia is gimping 3 way SLI for now before I bother with tri-sli 1080 Ti's. I have a feeling we are going to be using a lot of custom bio's and software to counter act nvidia's lack of want towards 3+ way sli.

I have a feeling you'll be halving the bandwidth between the cards if you go with a 3-way set-up. Instead of both connectors going between the cards, you're going to be splitting the connectors between the other two cards. I would guess this will, in high total resolution set-ups, force data sharing over the PCI-e connection, depending on the MDA/LDA mode and VRAM management strategy.

While nvidia has said they won't stop 3 and 4 way, they are officially not supporting it, nor are they supporting/offering support to developers and Microsoft with 3 and 4 way scaling in regards to games and DX12 and 12_1.

So with the exception of PC exclusive AAA title games where the studio goes out of it's way to purposely test and design support to scale with 3 way or... I feel as if it will be how 3 way is to 4 way these days. No real gain at all.

Funny Meller - I was thinking the same thing about the 3 way to 4 way comparison. Even still, x2 1080TIs look to be beastly at least. I guess we are in a wait and see type of situation for now and as Alex said, NVIDIA could change their minds (there is always the Hail Mary Pass that AMD could pull something out of their butts and force NVIDIA to rethink too but that's probably wishful thinking - lol). Any guesses when the TIs will drop? Around November of this year? What are thoughts on that?

Two GTX 1080's in SLI (2x) should be more than plenty, even with 4K gaming.

But two GTX 1080's in SLI for 4k will be great, but not enough to justifty 4x 560mm cooling. Plus, 4k gaming is great and all, but I need enough graphical power to run 3x 1440p in surround with a 4th 4k monitor for movies. Hence why i'm so excited for 3way or higher SLI for the Ti Class...

Like all epeen aside... It's like I want 3x 1440p Surround Display... but at the same time I want that 3440x1440p 34" curved monitor from ASUS too. I'm thinking if the Ti class has sketchy 3way and 4way support out the gate like the 1080 does... It'll be a curved monitor with I don't know what else.

This generation has me all confused.

Curved 4K IGZO or IPS panel 34" monitor with G-Sync and over 100 refresh rate!! That's what I've been waiting for. Still not there yet but maybe it'll drop by the time the 1080 TIs drop!

It's the over 100 refresh rate part. a 4k curved that isn't 40+" would be great... but I'm really into this ulta widescreen curve on the ASUS PG348Q is everything you could want... except it's 100MHz refresh rate.

Right the refresh is the kicker. I'm hoping something comes out soon addressing that. Not sure if it's viable but with the horsepower these video cards are putting out, there definitely becomes a more realistic demand for it now...

We won't see a curved 3440x1440 this year that supports IPS, G-SYNC, and > 100hz refresh rate. That's a next year at CES type of product.

Oh yea, I'm going to be mad as hell when I finally drop $1,300 on the PG348Q, just to see a better bigger brother for cheaper come out next year. But god, I'm so in love with ultra curved widescreen. ugh I have so many choices on my monitor set up :(

the display port 1.3 standard has been out so long (coming up on 2 years) that 1.4 just released this past March. which means we could all (well many of us) be enjoying 4k at 120Hz by now.  what's really frustrating is why the monitor industry hasn't produced one yet.

Because that would mean they actually listen to us and sell us things we want on a timely manner. Instead, they hold onto it for a couple of years, until we get a prototype of like Display port 1.4a or 1.4b or whatever... then release like "OMG LOOK WHAT WE JUST DID!!! CRAZY!".

yeah, instead they're pumping out curved 34" 1080p TN-panel monitors.  seriously, who wants to look at that?  i mean, i used to run a 3x1080p surround setup like 5 years ago!  sure, it was cool and all, but that was...5 YEARS ago!!  lol ah wellConfused

after my experiment with this Acer 32" IPS 4k monitor i'm returning it for my original idea of the Asus curved 34" 1440p monitor you listed Meller.  it's too hard for me to go from 120Hz down to 60Hz and the lack of optimization for my two 980ti's in games like The Division has actually diminished my playing experience from a single 120Hz 1080p TN-panel if you can believe that.  Cry
