Sorry wasn't able to post this in Industry News.

Here's the link:

If that's true I will be throwing 2 or 3 of those in SLI! Strong

Guess the question is how fast will DS get these in, since this just now put a wrench in my build plans. To many times I've built a system and had a new gen card come out a month or 2 later.  From what I've read the price point should be identical to the GTX 480 meaning its price will go down and you'll also beable to get into a GTX 580 for the same price if you had planned on going with the soon to be older GTX 480's.  Also read there looking to be about 15% more power then the 480's and a bit better on power consumption and about 45% more power then the top card AMD just released the 6870 I think it was.

The 6870 is easily beaten by the 580 b/c it's a mid-end card. The 5870 beat the 6870 in 3DMark Vantage. The 68XX series is replacing the 57XX series - a poor choice in ATI's naming as it confuses the public. I also read the 580s will be the new flagship and depending on type, it'll be a 5% - 50% performance boost over the 480. There'll still be more power consumption, but news is there's a better cooling and it will run quieter than the 480 (not by a noticable margin, though).

CryMan, the Radeon 5970 is still better even with this latest release.  Still hoping Nvidia will catch up!

Nvidia will always catch up. Same applies for AMD.

As has been said repeatedly, that is not a single GPU, it is two cards bootstrapped together.

A 5970 is two underclocked 5870s in Crossfire.

You would get better performance just having two normal 5870s in Crossfire.

EDIT: And don't even think of trying to use two 5970s together. That is quad Crossfire (4 GPUs), and they preform horribly. ATI's quad Crossfire scaling is terrible.

EDIT2: The fact that a 480 performs close to a 5970, which is two GPUs, should be telling. And why in the world is this thread even in the configuration section anyway? It has nothing to do with configuring rigs, you people need to learn to start threads in the right area, especially when there is already one on the 580 in the industry news folder.

You know your reaching here, complete apples and oranges comparison.  Take pretty much any current SLI setup and make that same argument stick. *)

I didn't start this thread, so "you people" does not apply to me.

5970 is two 5870s underclocked to stay within power regulations, and strapped together onto one PCB.

Asus's ARES is dubbed a 5870x2, and is like the 5970 with the exception of not being underclocked (but being a power hog)

Two 5870s in classic XFire have been tested to beat out both in practicality within common system situations.

If it does come out, I'm gonna be one happy dog, lol, smack when Black Ops comes out. Probably won't get it anyways, though, some people are claiming that this is really just nVidia's attempt to steal the show from ATI. Would rather wait for nVidia's official 2011 slate to come out.

Anyone can post there, there are no restrictions for that folder. If you ever get a denied message about something while trying to edit or post something then you got logged out while you were working on it, you'll have to log back in before you post. Make sure to copy the text of your posts before you hit the post button to keep from losing it in the event of this happening.

But besides that, there's already a thread about 580s in the industry news folder that has been there since the 21st, so you should of just replied there.

Right thanks will make note of that.

Since the overwhelming majority of people contemplating builds and visiting DS will come to this forum vs. "Industry News" it probably makes sense to have it here.

Anyone ordering a high end system with 480s when the 580s come out in a week would be awfully pissed.

For anyone ordering 480s now, spend a little more on EVGA cards so if 580 really does come out for reals (and not just a paper release to scare ATI users), you can just take advantage of step up and not be screwed Big%20Smile

Just wait...in due time this topic will magically teleport over to Industry News
(eyeballs around for Alex Ninja)
