GTX 970 lockup/freeze my PC

Intel Core i7 2600K Processor
Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB RAM
ASUSTeK P8P67 DELUXE Motherboard
Corsair AX750 750watt PSU
2x 250GB Intel 510 Series SSD in Raid 0

I recently upgrade my video card from EVGA GTX 770 2GB Video card to EVGA GTX 970 4GB FTW video card, right after I installed new video card and new driver, I ran Windows system assessment test to ensure the video card is working correctly but halfway during the system assessment it completely froze up my PC, I press the reset button on my PC to reset my PC but it wouldn't go past the POST screen, I press the reset again and the same thing happened that it stuck on the POST screen. I had to completely power off the PC then power on again to able to boot up correctly. Right after I boot up to desktop I tried to run system assessment one more time and the same problem happened again. I removed the GTX 970 card and placed my old GTX 770 card back in my system. My GTX 770 ran flawlessly without any issue during system assessment test. Do you think I might have got defective video card?

OK, first things first.

Does your motherboard have the B3 revision? 5 ways to tell are here:
http://event.asus.com/2011/mb/Identify_B3_Motherboards/

If not update the BIOS:
http://support.asus.com/ServiceHome.aspx?SLanguage=en

Follow instructions EXACTLY when flashing the BIOS!!



The GTX 770 to GTX 970 should be straight forward upgrade but if the above doesn't do it try this:

Download the Nvidia driver to desktop but do not install it yet:
http://www.geforce.com/drivers


In control panel - check the on-board graphics and uncheck everything Nvidia.

In control panel click programs and features and uninstall everything Nvidia.

Go to the drive Nvidia is installed on (C\Nvidia or E\Nvidia) and delete the Nvidia folder.
On the same drive go to Program Files (X86) and delete the Nvidia folders there.

Restart your computer.
Install the Nvidia driver from your desktop.

Go to control panel (graphics - sound,video and game controlers - etc) and make sure on-board graphics is unchecked and Nvidia graphics driver and PhysX is checked. -- uncheck the other Nvidia items (3D sound etc.).


Restart your computer.

Try it and see if the problem is there.

If you still have the problem I'd return the video card.

EDIT: If the POST fails, always let it run for awhile - I usually give it at least 1/2 hour. It could be that windows is troubleshooting, fixing corrupted files, repairing the boot mgr or start up files.
Too many people go "OH NOES IT DIED   RESET" -- give it some time.

Yes, my motherboard had the B3 revision, I have latest BIOS update although the latest BIOS for my motherboard was almost 3 years old now.

As for the video card driver, I did download and install the latest Nvidia driver but didn't helped, I haven't try out other steps uninstall the Nvidia driver and delete Nvidia folder. I have already return the video card for a replacement once I get new replacement I will have try out the rest of steps. With luck hopefully the new replacement card won't have to do that at all.

Sounds like a plan.

The reason I suggested deleting the Nvidia folder is Nvidia stores info and settings on what you have, have changed to, updated, hotfixed, etc and we don't want possible conflicts.

Got my replacement today, I ran system assessment test again, this time the test complete without a problem. It looks like my first video card was probably defective.
