Hi everyone,
Well my current cpu is an I7 860 so I am certainly due for an update! I have tried a couple configurations but was hoping you guys could help me out. I am going to be using this system for gaming in addition to web development. By web development I mean anything from simple coding to image editing, video processing, etc. I am a part time gamer but I do plan on using 4 k in a few months when the next gen of monitors comes out. Here is basically what I have been thinking about getting and I am not sure which model this would fall under so please help point me in the right direction.. I think my budget would be around $3,000 or less. BTW - I want a solid and reliable system I can keep for many years. I built my current system about 10 years ago.. I think the I7 - 6800 would be a good fit for my needs and the GTX 1080 would be good for a long time as well. I want to stick with air cooling for longevity and as far as the rest goes I will leave it up to you experts.. I would like 32gb of ram and raid 1 with 2-2tb drives for redundancy and a single 500ssd for the os. What do you guys think as far as the case, psu, mo bo, coolings, etc? Thanks so much! Nice to meet you! |

Here is what I just came up with. I think the motherboard could be swapped for something less expensive though.

Hi Richieboy67... That build looks good to me. I would however change the power supply to the other 750watt for the extra $34. A better box, better efficiency and double the warranty.
If you plan on 4 k gaming at higher game settings, I'd up the psu to a 1000 watt for sli. The single card will play at 4K for sure but not the higher end settings some prefer. Games like the Witcher and others can tax any single card. The 6800k you mentioned with its extra CPU cores might help with video work but the 6700k is no slouch and a good pick. Up to you. Noctua is a great pick for the best in reliability and quiet. Hope this helps, sorry it took so long to respond and good luck. Edit,, Your Corridium case is fine. Without going with water cooling, this case, the Apollo, Velox all work. More of a personal look or preference. Edited by bprat22 - 15 Jul 2016 at 6:40am |

Thanks so much.
I am thinking of a couple changes: 1453365 The Digital Storm Velox case may be a better pick with the large fans because it may be a little quieter. I am not sure if it is worth the extra cash though. Thoughts? Also, are the fans I chose worth the extra $100? I will definitely consider the more powerful power supply. I may decide to do dual gpu's in the future when the gtx 1080 is far more affordable. Has anyone done the financing? Is it possible to pay over a couple years rather than one and what is the interest rate? Thanks again, Rich |

The Velox case has excellent airflow. One of the best here. Your build is not that much of a thermal challenge for a case to handle, especially with the video card with its single fan that kicks all the heat out the back.

The only thing that puts me off a bit on this case is the lack of dust filtration.

Stock fan filters on most cases do little more than trap some dust and hair. Dust still gets in. It's keeping the PC off the flow where the dust swirls about and cleaning it with canned air that works..
DS said they made the decision for no Velox filters for that reason and to allow a little better airflow. |

Clean your system once a week and it will literally take 2 min.
As bp mentioned if your area is dusty nothing will keep it out, best thing to do are things bp mentioned. |

Ok, I suppose the amount of fans in this case would blow most of the dust right out the back anyways.
In regards to the case fans, will they just run full out all the time unless I get the controller? Thanks guys, I'm hoping to pull the trigger on this next week!! |

We get fans for airflow, so we want them running all the time.
Don't bank on the dust getting in the case adn then out, it won't, it will get stuck to everything inside if you let it go for a while. IF you want to control your fans then order a different controller. |

I just figured this thing will be running 24/7 pretty much and there is no reason to run all those fans at idle.
I'm going to change the power supply for future upgrade possibilities and I'll check out the fan controller. Thanks so much for your help everyone!:) |

Fans draw very little power, and better temps are always a friend of electronics. But its really upto you, no matter what keep eye on temps if you decide to lower them just in case.

True but this case really may be overkill for me unless I eventually add a second 1080 which I'm planning on doing. I was just thinking of noise and of power usage when the system is idling.
Thanks |

Honestly the noise and power is not much to even think about. Your main power draw is the gpus and cpu/mobo if you will.
Is this pc going to be in a very quiet room? cause if there is tv or another fan running you will not hear the case fans at all. |

you don't need a fan controller. you can control (and configure a fan profile) them thru the bios or software as well. the fan controller just makes it convenient.
dont'cha want to feel the pride of owning a DS custom case? something only DS customers have the opportunity to purchase? |

If there is other normal noise you should not hear the pc at all. IF your fans are connected to the mobo then you can control them from the bios or with software but I have seen cases here where the fans are connected to the psu so you either need a fan controller to connect the fans to or you need to reconnect the fans to the mobo headers. i wasn't aware that DS did that with the fans. i thought they either use their custom fan control board and software or plug the fans into the mobo headers.
the mobo is capable of running fans in either pwm or DC mode, but you need to have the fans also be pwm capable if you want to control them individually/dynamically on the fly. those fans you selected from Corsair are okay, but they are DC fans, so you can only set their speed (either 7V or 12V from their specs) in the bios or thru software like Asus Fan Xpert3. if you didn't spring for the DS fan controller then you should have them connected to the mobo fan headers. |

In the old days if you got the controller then they would connect them to the mobo/controller, but if you didn't get controller they just connected them to the psu.
I emailed Alex to see what they are doing now, waiting for response. |

Ok Guys, thank you all very much for the help.
I am curious as to what you guys think about the case I chose here. Could I get away with something a bit less expensive but still make use of the other hardware I chose? I would like to cut the cost a bit if possible while keeping the cpu, gpu, drives and memory at least. Thanks |

Never mind I see you want with a velox, any full tower will do really, but if you want the same ballpark airflow then Apollo should do a good job IMHO.
Coridium is a little smaller but it should do fine also. Edited by DST4ME - 17 Jul 2016 at 5:55pm |

Thanks, I am really having a tough time making up my mind. Some of the components I am picking are only for the future possibility of using 2 gtx 1080s. This could be 3 years down the road or more for all I know or maybe never. I am close to purchasing. I just have some choices to make. Spend less for only what I know I need right now or spend extra for what I may do later.. As I spend more time thinking about this I am leaning towards going with what I know I need now. Chances are I will be fine with a single 1080 for a few years to come...if not then it may just mean it will be time for a complete upgrade again. :) |

I have made some changes:
1454575 In regards to ram.. How do we know what will be installed? I mean if we order 32gb will we get 2 16 modules? The reason I ask is because I just opted to lower my ram down to 16 hoping I could just add more in the future. Is this possible? Thanks Edited by Richieboy67 - 17 Jul 2016 at 6:32pm |

You Should contact DS to be 100% sure for your config, but I believe for 16GB you get 2 x 8GB sticks but again that is just a guess on my part, each system is different so its best to ask/request 2 sticks.
If you think about it the only thing you are doing that is more for sli is just a psu. But if you know for a fact you are good with one gpu for the next 3 years then go with a smaller psu, the one you have chosen is fine. The cordium does not come with the top fans so add 3 fans to the top. |

I think this is my final build. I have already been approved for the financing as I just do not have room on any of my cards right now. I am just trying to get my head around paying the extra 14.99 apr I was offered to finance.. Once I purchase this I am also looking at getting a new monitor as well for $1500 or under so this is a big purchase for me..
My last configuration is 1455044 Can you guys take one last look? Thanks |
