Topic: i7 950 @ 3.8GHz bottleneck newer video cards Posted: 13 Mar 2013 at 11:50am |
Hey guys... I am thinking about getting a new video card. I currently have two GTX 580's in SLI. I like to tack on a lot of AA + downsampling and the like and feel like in some games I would benefit from some more VRAM.
My i7 950 is running at 3.8GHz per the oc from Digital Storm. Would upgrading to a single 680 be worth it? Would I be bottlenecked by my CPU?

Hi nomec.... you'll take a hit in performance going from sli 580s to single 680. The single 680 has a bit more vram but unless your gaming on a high res monitor or multi monitor I doubt you'll see any gain. The 680 might be 40% faster, give or take, than single 580 but sli 580 wins out.
No bottleneck if you do go 680. Your chip still holds its own in my opinion. Even though the 680 is Pcie 3.0 it is backward compatable to your 2.0 slots and doesn't saturate it at all. |

Cool, man - thanks for the thorough response. I think I should be set for now until I decide to pick up a new machine from DS. Geforce Titan sounds nice.

Yeah, the Titan is a sweet card, just expensive for my wallet.
But for single card, it rocks. |

The Titan is indeed awesome, though the price tag is insane from my perspective. Of course that hasn't stopped me from entering every contest I see offering one as prize.

I don't think you gonna see much gain going from sli 580 to titan to be honest.

I upgraded from a GTX295 to EVGA Titan SC and I have a I7 920 OCed to 3.6 and it gives silky smooth game play. I really like the improvement in performance.
