Hey guys I was wanting to upgrade my cpu. I was wondering what would be a really good cpu for gaming and would compliment my gtx 970 nicely. Thanks guys!

I would save your money and keep what you have. Its still an excellent cpu. The H81 mobo doesn't allow for overclocking, so even if you went with a i5- 4690k or i7-4790k, you wouldn't be able to take advantage of the K overclock ability.
You're still good to go. The 4690k and 4790k do have a higher base and turbo clock speed, but it would be an expensive way to increase clock speed from 3.7 turbo to 3.9 or so. Edited by bprat22 - 30 Dec 2014 at 11:36am |

If you went with a Z97 mobo and a 4690k cpu and overclocked it to 4.4 for example, you'd see a few to several fps better, depending on the game, but still not worth the upgrade in my book. The gtx 970 doesn't need the upgraded overclocked cpu to get the most out of it. You can if you want, it doesn't hurt of course, but just staying up with the video cards for awhile should do it.
Your choice, but I wouldn't. |

Okay thanks your advice was really helpful. I think I'll wait a little on getting a new cpu then.

My pleasure. Yeah, cpu/mobo's are usually good for about 3-5 years before they start showing their age. It's the video card every 2-3 years that keeps you on top.
