Yeah, you can only 4 way sli for gaming. 4X Titan Z is 8 way and they can all be hooked up but won't run in sli. This setup is for rendering where gpu's can be stacked i believe.

IMO, for gaming, 2-way SLI with 980 is your best bet if you are willing to spend the money, and don't want to spend $600 more for 3-way
3-way is of some benefit, in a few games for 4k gaming. 4-way is of questionable value due to poor scaling. For the fanatic, or wealthy Titan Z and Titan Black don't seem the like the best gaming choices to me. Titan Black is slower than 980 in benchtests I have seen. Titan Z seems slower than 980 SLI |

Rendering can take a long time which is where the Z's power comes in. Generally though for applications like movie making they would use multiple CPUs and cloud based rendering which can take hours or days of rendering lighting and effects to 1/10 or even 1/20 of the normal. also rendering can be done at 8K or 16K whereas gaming is just getting into 4k.
It was the cuda cores that did the work. I'm no expert on it, just had occasion to ask about a set-up I saw at a convention here. |

A "poor man's" Cray Piz Daint
This was for a CUDA low-level compute API and not a graphics API, so there is plenty of scaling with it. |

Yes, understood the configuration with 4x Titans is a different thing than gaming with SLI. I was countering the spamming by ultrazilla who keeps posting silly setups to threads that don't meet people's stated reqs
