I got my rig a little over a year and a half ago, and for the past few months, it's been nearly impossible to play anything. Games from Minecraft to Trials Fusion to Borderlands 2 all run terribly now and I'm really not sure why. The games will typically load up just fine, but after a minute or two in game play, it slows down immensely, to the point of being unplayable. Any advice as to what might be causing this, or what I can do to improve performance would be amazing.

Rig:
-Veloce
-Intel Core i7 4800MQ (Up to 3.70Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache)
-8GB DDR3 1600MHz (2x4GB Sticks)
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB with NVIDIA Optimus

Games only or internet also? Do you use STEAM or another host?

Videos and Youtube?

What OS?
What anti-virus?
What internet provider and speed?
What have you tried so far?

OK we'll start here.

Download and run Ccleaner from:
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Download and run wise disk cleaner and wise registry cleaner from:
http://www.wisecleaner.com/products.html

Download and run malwarebytes from:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Run a full scan with your antivirus (preferably a boot scan)

From an elevated command prompt (run as administrator)
type 'sfc /scannow' (without quotes). Once it finishes type exit

After you do these things give it a try and post results here.

I see you're on a laptop with Optimus.  I wonder if there's some kind of GPU throttling going on, even on AC power?

Have you dusted it out since getting it?  High temps will cause throttling, and it sounds like that might be what's happening since it starts off well and then degrades quickly.

Good point, Roykirk. I forgot to add cleaning and checking for temps with HWmonitor.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have Avast Anti Virus (Free version).
I'm currently on campus Wifi, but things have always been pretty fast.

I just ran through the things you suggested, and same thing. I started running Trials Fusion, works fine for a minute or two, but as soon as I get to a part in the map where there is a lot going on, it starts to slow down.

I haven't cleaned/dusted it out, and one thing I've noticed is that the fan always seems to be running fast, to the point of it being noticeable by people around me. Could that be connected to what is going on? What should I look for temp wise/how would I go about fixing it?

Thanks for the help!

Temps should stay under 80C at all times, iirc.

So I think we found the issue, since right after turning it on, with nothing else running, temperatures are running around 85, and had maxed out at about 97 during the start up.

If you did everything I suggested that rules out memory bog due to junk files, corrupted Windows files and malware.

This pretty much points to heat and/or voltage.

Grab a couple cans of compressed air, some Q-tips, pipe cleaners, alcohol (not the kind ya drink - wellll keep the two separate ) and maybe a roommates T shirt.

Spray out the computer with compressed air (gently holding fans to keep them from turning), a patch from the T shirt with alcohol will get a lot from parts of the case. Use the Q-tips to gently clean the fans and pipe cleaners to get in between vanes on CPU cooler and tight spots.
Next is the battery. clean it, check it for leakage, and go online to see if there is a recall. Batteries are good for recalls for overheating, leakage and even setting laptops on fire.

download HWmonitor here:
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

I look for <70 on CPU and <80 on GPU. Temps may go above that temporarily but should stay below it.

First step is to clean the dust out of the fans and fins on the copper cooler.  This will make a huge difference in temps if there's a lot of dust in there.  After clearing out the dust, fire it up again and start some gaming to see if the frame rate drops continue, or if there's an improvement.

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you guys so much for the help. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to the inner workings of a computer though. What would be the best way to clean out the fan? Would I have to take off the bottom of the laptop or could I do it without removing anything?

I have to defer this question to Roykirk or DS techs. I don't use the krypton so I'm unfamiliar with that part of it.

Sorry

I'm not sure how the Veloce compares to the Krypton, but you'd likely want to take off the bottom so you can get to the fans as well as the copper cooling fins.  This way you can hold something lightly against the fan blades when you clean so that they don't spin.  You can ruin the fan bearings if they're able to spin freely during this process.  The Krypton bottom panel is a single large one with only a few screws, so it's nothing too difficult if the Veloce is the same.

You'll want a can of compressed air like Dust-Off.  Read the instructions on the can before you do anything as there are warnings there about how to hold it and such, as well as don't ever shake the can.  You'll also want to use short bursts of air.

This is a decent guide to dusting things out.

As I know next to nothing about laptops, I do have a soft spot for dusting and cleaning. I was using canned air (ALOT!) until ArkansasWoman turned me on to the http://www.amazon.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW

Hand held, electric blower to push through all the dust and crap that gathers in these machines. Best part is that it costs about he same as 6 cans of air but will last so much longer, has TREMENDOUS airflow and you don't need to worry about tipping the can to get the frozen aerosol into your machine.

I recommend holding the fans so that they don't overspin with either method.

But yea, you gotta get in there to get all the dust bunnies out so your machine has a chance to breathe and live longer. Remember when it comes to computers, dust kills.

Good luck and cheers!

She is so right. This thing has already paid for itself in cans of air I ~haven't~ purchased. No worries about tipping the can and getting frozen aerosol into the pieces and parts of the computer, no worries about running out of air in the middle of a cleaning, no worries about getting down to the store to get more... it's just the "bee's knees"!

One caveat, and to me this isn't very important, to others it may be.. but...

This thing is LOUD! Make sure you warn the others in your house and expect the pets to react like you've turned on the vacuum cleaner. The datavac does make some noise.

Update: Thank everyone for the help! I just cleaned out my fan and what a difference. Things aren't perfect (I'm still getting a bit of lag when playing borderlands 2), but at least it's playable.

Hi truejukes..... Another thing to check is to make sure your laptop is actually using your discrete graphics card and not the integrated, much less powerful, graphics processor.

Go into Nvidia Control Panel, 3D settings, Global, and set it to run High Performance Nvidia Processor or something similar. You can also, under the other tab, setup individual games.

It probably is setup correctly, but worth checking.
