Topic: Looking for Recommendation Posted: 19 Oct 2008 at 1:31pm |
I'm looking for recommendations on a gaming PC that would be on the quiet side. I'm not a heavy duty gamer - mostly dualboxing WoW, plus things like Sims, Spore, etc. No FPS. I currently use a fairly new GeForce 8800 GTS 512 to run a 24" monitor at 1920x1200 in WoW, and am happy with the card's performance (so wouldn't need a new one). The only real dislike I have for my current PC is that the fans are loud - so I'd be interested in finding out what quieter options DST might offer. My price range would probably be up to $2K but could go higher for the right configuration. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

quieter is liquid cooling, you will still hear the water move around a bit but its not anything like fans running full speed.

Thanks, that looks pretty appealing. Are there any other cases you'd recommend? I'm not sure I care for the styling of that one, although from the reviews I read it is very quiet. Also from a 'bang for the buck" viewpoint, would AMD be better than Intel, or vice-versa?
Thanks!

Intel has been ahead for a while now, so I would say Intel is your money's worth right now.
teh same for the case, this case offers lot of things for the price point, you would have a hard times getting the same benefits from another case and still keep that price point. Have you seen any of our customers with it? here is a good view of it if you have not seen it here is one of our customers with the this case, in blue lights: Click images to enlarge here it is from one of our cutomers with red lights: I can recommend other cases but the price will be higher and you will not get the same cooling as the HAF. |

Thanks for the pictures - it's a bit 'flashy' for me, but I'm pretty much the only one who will see it anyhow. :-)
Now I just have to decide if "quieter" is worth spending the $$ on a whole new system. :-)
Thanks!

you got some thinking to do, the only case we have that would cost less then the HAF is a smaller case and I wouldn't recommend that for the setup I'm recommending.
if I can help you anymore, let me know now you have to remember this setup I'm recommending is liquid cooled so this is gonna be quiet, however when you play games your GPU fans might seem/be loud. to over come that, you will need to liquid cool the GPUs which is what I was talking about earlier, cause it will cost a bit to liquid cool the GPUs also. however most people are fine with just the cpu liquid cooled and they don't seem to think its loud. If you are otherwise happy with your current computer, there are a few inexpensive options to get the noise level down.
1) Replace the CPU fan and heatsink with a quieter model. The one DSO uses is the OCZ Vanquisher, costs just $30 and reviews give it a thumbs up for low noise level. Don't forget some high quality thermal paste, just a couple bucks more. There are many other options, I think tomshardware.com did a roundup not long ago.
2) Replace your case fan(s) with a low-noise fan such as Zalman's (also used by DSO in Stage 3 cooling).
3) Get some sound insulation for the sides of your case.
