Budget:
$3000 including peripherals Expectations: High fps on single monitor 1080p Usage: Gaming, light streaming, modding, surfing web. Types of games played: Company of Heroes 2,Total War,Mount & Blade,Crusader Kings 2,GTA V. Special Needs: Router not close to where computer will be so I need a wireless connection. Will the wireless PCI-E Asus PCE-N53 be a sound choice or should I choose a mobo with WiFi connectivity? Will the OS be installed on the hard drive or can it be installed on the SSD? Any thoughts or feedback on my setup would be greatly appreciated. Hi kingofthewargs,
That is a great build for you application. I wouldn't change anything except maybe the PCE N53. I would get a 802.11 AC PCI WiFi card. Sooner or later you will want to get a 802.11 AC router. The AC router is much faster than the 802.22 n or g router. The 802.11 AC card is backward compatible to the n,g router. If your existing router is some distance from your computer or is going through a few walls. I would get a PCI card that has an external antenna. That will help to aim your signal at the router. My choice is ASUS AC1900 Dual-Band PCIe Wireless Adapter. You can mount the antennas on the back of the computer or use a provided cable and mount it in a better place. Frank |

Hi FrankW,
Thanks for the input. I'm a bit of a noob with things such as this but I am trying to keep my build open to the future. My question is would the items you listed be available from DS as a special order or would I have to acquire them my self and install them. Also, if I have to order the items myself how involved would it be to install them? Again sorry for the noob questions. Thanks |

Hi kingofthewargs,
You can special order from DS but I think it might be cheaper to order yourself. Talk to DS and see what they say. Newegg.com has what you want. As to installing a PCI card. The card has contacts on the board that plugs into the motherboard. You just remove one screw and metal blank. Plug in your card and put the screw back in. A very simple procedure to install. You may have some software to deal with but if you have already connected to your router with something you should be able to figure it out. I know that even a simple procedure can be scary to someone with no experience. If you are more comfortable with DS doing it then that works too. If the WiFi card/antenna I suggested is too expensive then the ASUS PCE-AC56 802.11ac Dual-band Wireless-AC1300 PCI-E Adapter will work. The antenna setup is not as flexible. One thing you should do is check out your router and see what unit you have. It will be a 802.11 n,g or b. The n is the newest and faster than the g or b. If you have a g or b it is time to upgrade to a 802.11ac router. If not, your speed between the computer and the router could be low. I don't want to push you into buying something you don't need or can't afford. If you have an n router you can get a n WiFi card from DS that they have in stock. I am just making suggestions to get the highest performance you can between your computer and the router. Also, if you have a 802.11ac WiFi card and a 802.11n router the WiFi card will work with your router but it won't be at the ac speeds. It will be at the n speed. That is a excellent build and , like Frank, I wouldn't change anything. Great picks.
The only thing about special orders from DS, is that they will not warranty the part. You'll have the manufacturers warranty but not directly from DS. Just the special order part, not the rig. Unless you plan on adding another 980 in sli, the EVGA 750 watt psu would be all you need. It's a $26 savings, so not a big price difference. Good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 13 May 2015 at 11:05am |

Hi FrankW
Thanks again for taking time to reply. This is the first time I can have my own dedicated computer rather than sharing a destop so I'm just trying to make sure everything is correct. My router is a fios g110 which says it supports ac/g/n/b so I guess it is 802.11ac but I'm not entirely sure. The router is about 30 feet from where the computer will go with no walls in the way. Thanks |

Hi bpratt22,
Thanks for looking over my configuration, and for the warranty information with special orders. I chose the EVGA 850 watt because I do plan to sli in the future just couldn't afford to do it at this time. Thanks |

Got it.
Technically, even sli 980 only needs a 750 watt psu, but for 26 bucks, I would get the 850w. The new 970/980's are much better than previous cards on their energy needs. |

Hi kingofthewargs,
OK, with an 802.11ac router you definitely want to get a 802.11ac PCI card. You will see a big increase in the speed between your computer and router over a 802.11n card. Frank |

Yeah for 26 bucks I figured why not? Plus it leaves a little wiggle room. Thanks |

So after thinking on it I'm leaning towards dropping a PCI card and changing my mobo to the Asus Z97 Pro with 802.11ac connectivity. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi kingofthewargs,
I looked at all of the reviews of the Asus Z97 Pro WiFi ac motherboard that I could find. None of them tested the bps speed. One user comment stated he wouldn't have bought the Pro WiFi motherboard if he had known that the board operates at 800bps (ac). He stated that a PCI card would be 1300bps. I don't know if that is true or not. It is true that the 802.11ac PCI cards claim 1300bps but no one ever gets the top speed do to their setup. I also looked at the comments at Newegg and Amazon and there were several complaints about the Asus Pro WiFi not working very well. Of course there were a lot more comments about how well it worked. So, my guess is the Asus Pro WiFi motherboard is a choice you can make. However, it is possible your speed will be less than what a PCI card might give you. Since you are only thirty feet away with no obstructions, then maybe it will be OK for you. I can't say one way or the other. I can say in most cases a PCI card built for a specific function usually works better than a motherboard add on. For instances, a sound card works better than on board sound. On board sound is good but not as good as a sound card. This may also apply to WiFi. Frank Edited by FrankW - 14 May 2015 at 2:52pm |

So after a few days researching I've decided to move the router to where the computer will be. I also have come up with another build I like better, but would like to hear some feedback.

Very nice build.
Either the sealed units or the Noctua air cooled will perform about the same. The advantage of the sealed is that is smaller and gives easier access to the inboard ram sticks and better view of the mobo. The Noctua will probably be quieter and more reliable. Noctua just works for years with no pump , etc to go bad. Nothing to go wrong with a big block of cooling fins. Noctua will also increase airflow across the mobo as the center fan extends below the fins a little bit. Others will argue it restricts airflow, being so large, but that just isn't true. Either work.
