You mean upgrade this pc correct? If yes then first thing is gonna be psu, then gpu/ram/ssd
Basically a new pc, after all those upgrades you still left with an old cpu, so think about it hard, but if you are ok wuth current Cpu the make the mentioned upgrade. Get a 850 pro ssd from samsung, unless you want to go m. 2. Clone your drive so you don't need to reinstall anything. Add 8gb of ram to be at totall of 16gb Get anything from a 750w to 1000w psu, get modular, look at corsair hx or ax line, evga seems to be doing ok with psu also. A good 750w should do you solid with single gpu. Depending on your res and gaming look into 1060 or 1070, evga is the brand i get. Edited by DST4ME - 09 Sep 2017 at 5:12pm |

The experts like DST4ME know much more than I do; but I have the Vanquish 2 (770gtx & 8Gb) and only replaced the GPU to a GTX1070 and added 8Gb Ram and it's like a whole new machine.

I have an older CPU than yours, i5-2500k, that still works great with just a video card upgrade from 6 years ago. Went from a gtx 570 to a 970 and I play most games on high to max on a 1080p screen. My CPU is overclocked which gives it the added life with better video cards.
You could just swap your 960 for a gtx 1060 and see almost a doubling of frame rates with most games. I'm assuming you have a 1920x1080 monitor or tv. The 430 watt psu is a little light but the 1060 might be OK. Of course, a whole new pc is always a nice way to go if the budget allows. Edited by bprat22 - 10 Sep 2017 at 3:51am |

@Snaike you have a 430w psu?
I would not use 1060 with 430w IMHO not a great idea. @MMM, check and see how much ordering the stuff i mentioned will cost, you don't have to upgrade to a ssd but if you can you should. Edited by DST4ME - 10 Sep 2017 at 4:16am |

I think the gtx 960 and the newer gtx 1060 have the same tdp, so it might be ok, but the 430 watt isn't anything I would ever recommend.
Some testers, like Guru3d, recommend a 350-400 watt for gtx 1060. If the budget allows, change it for sure, otherwise try it and see. |

True but not all 400w psu are equal and cs is corsair low Lvl psu with the lowest warranty. Also the 400w they recommend is with no oc on cpu or gpu so those are things members should keep in mind.
Then there is the reason why me and you don't care for a 400w psu, 50% load, his pc + 1060 easily = 240w so we are already above 50% load. His number is probably higher. Cheapest way is to just change gpu, but understand he is above 50%. If he wants to upgrade the pc, then he needs more ram, ssd, and IMHO a bigger better psu. I mean he os is still on hdd. Just to get into it, , his cpu and probably gpu have no oc.
But, yep, I would never put together any gaming pc, even an entry level with anything less than a 600 watt. There should be a law banning such things. I do say to try it with existing psu because swapping a non modular psu probably intimidates a lot of folk who would rather just buy a new pc. You and I can do it with our eyes closed, but others not so much. Any who, we do think alike. Scary. |

I know he has no oc otherwise he would be having all kinds of issues
I think its not just me and you, everyone likes headroom Ssd upgrade will help with read/write/boot/bottleneck and uses less power, so that will help reduce power consumption a little. Edited by DST4ME - 10 Sep 2017 at 8:11am |

Aww, now you made me look to see. I was happy not knowing what it was and now I have to. You're right, of course. Corsair CX600Mw powers the GTX 1070. |

no need to change that cpu, but you can oc it for more performance. you just need to upgrade your psu capacity and quality (like DST4ME recommended) and invest in better cooling. if you can fit a 360mm rad in the case i'd go the LC route and crank up the proc. you'll probably need to upgrade the mobo to support that though.
increase the system memory to 16GB to cover your bases. an ssd isn't a necessity, but it will speed up your system load times and load screens in games. it won't actually make gaming performance any better. for streaming and gaming the graphics card upgrade is a definite priority. you basically are currently not utilizing the cpu to its full potential. it is paired with an inferior motherboard better suited for use with non overclockable procs. the more powerful the graphics the more the cpu needs to keep up or it will "bottleneck". heat can also be a bottleneck as it will cause the components to throttle down and you want the boost clocks to be peaked while gaming. investing in a total system custom LC loop is fairly cost prohibitive for most people. i believe the V3 is a Corsair 230t case iirc. it only supports up to a 240/280mm rad in the top mounting location. you can modestly oc that proc of yours with a AIO CLC with a rad that size, but you can't really push it that high. you other option is to take the components you want to reuse and buy a bigger case that will support bigger LC radiators. since you need to upgrade the mobo it might be a good time to do that. it's up to you and your budget and how much you want to build yourself. check this for why i say your mobo is improperly paired with that proc: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Z87-H87-H81-Q87-Q85-B85---What-is-the-difference-473/ check this for Jayz2cents thoughts on overclocking the 4790K: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Z87-H87-H81-Q87-Q85-B85---What-is-the-difference-473/ ex. of mobo upgrade recommended: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157501 Edited by db188 - 11 Sep 2017 at 6:05pm |
