    Posted: 03 Dec 2015 at 4:04pm
Hi DS,

I'm looking to either upgrade my 980 to a 980 TI or a Titan X. How do I know if the card I purchase will fit in the case?

Suggestions? Is this a waste of money given what I have? I'd like to try upgrading to a 4k panel.

Thanks!

Mark

Titan x is by far most powerful card out for 4k. The 980ti can handle it but not as good as the titan x. Another good alternative is the r9 fury x and the new dual gpu fury X2 coming out early 2016

Hm lets see when I had my bolt 2 I was able to put an msi 780 ti into it. I would have to say an evga acx 2.0 would probably fit given the dimensions. I would say an evga gtx 980 ti ftw would do nicely since it has better phase power delivery and headroom for overclocking.

+1 to DigitalPickle's recommendation for the EVGA 980 Ti FTW.

I agree and stick with the 980 ti family card.   The Titan X might be a bit stronger but not by very much in gaming, especially for the premium price over the 980 ti.  The added vram will see little or no use.

Hi MarkNY,

I don't think there is any single card solution for 4K today. That is unless you are willing to take lower settings. How low I don't know. I just didn't want you to be disappointed with performance after you upgrade. It will be very playable but not ultra with all games. A dull card like dual gpu fury X2 is a crossfire solution. A dull GPU single card is always a poor choice due to the cost to replace after warranty.

Frank

The people that say that a single GPU can't do 4K are the ones that insist that they have every setting maxed out and get rediculously high FPS. That isn't really necessary; sure it is nice to have, but 4K resolution alone is pretty nice. I was able to do 4K on a 970 card on select games and I put the resolution down to 1080p on games that it couldn't handle, which I was fine with. So, some games you will be able to max every setting with a 980 Ti, and others you may have to drop a few settings down to high or medium, especially things like anti-aliasing.

Thanks for the replies! Would you guys recommend going with a 144hz 1440p panel instead of 4K with a single 980 ti?

Thanks!!

It's up to you on what you want in your use. If you're more interested in sharpness in visual detail and high quality media, 4K is the better choice. If you want something better for very fast paced games, like first person shooters, then a 144Hz monitor would be better.

watch this and judge for yourself what hardware you'll need for some of today's more demanding games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LA6g5bK_0fE

you'll see (with the 4k benchmarks) how often fps falls below 60 fps.

I have a 34" curved ultra wide, and it's amazing! I would much rather have it than 4K.
