My rig is :

Processor: Intel Core i7 5930K 3.5GHz (SixCore) (Unlocked CPU)
Motherboard: ASUS X99 RAMPAGE V (Intel X99 Chipset)
System Memory: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX (HighPerformance)
Graphics Card(s): 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4GB (Includes PhysX)

I need a new monitor, I want a really nice looking picture. I do a lot of gaming. Size would be 27" or higher.

Budget about 1300$

Looking at the Acer predator, anyone had any experience with the 21:9 ? Curved?

Any other suggestions on monitors?

Also, do you think it would be worth going with a 1070 or 1080 instead of the sli 980s?

Predatro XB271HU 27 comes highly recommended from one of our good members.

And we would both advise you to wait for the ips 4k 144Hz monitor coming out end of 2016 / first half of 2017, those are gonna be some amazing monitors.

and for those you gonna need the newer cards so that you can take advantage of db 1.3/1.4. for that res I would start with one titan x and then if needed go sli titan x.

So if you can wait and get those monitors and then upgrade your gpus then.

Yea, the issue I have is my screen finally went out so I'm using a old 19" dell monitor and it makes my eyes bleed.

Asus ROG SWIFT PG348Q has caught my eye. I'm really in intrigued in the whole 21:9 or wide screen. Have you had any experience with the wide screen monitors? Also any clue to when the Titan X will come out?

I like widescreen myself whenever possible, but I have not updated my u30 dell for a while now, look around the forum and you will see most of our members here seem to go with acer for less problems.

titan x is suppose to be announced this month but I assume it would be out sept.

i had issues with the Asus PG348Q i tried out.  it's overdrive refresh rate is not native (60Hz is native).  i had flickering issues with mine and i also didn't like the integrated stand.  i use a 3-monitor VESA rail system and even though the monitor has screw holes for mounting 100x100mm VESA it leaves a big circular back cutout with exposed electrical connections (where the integrated mount would connect to illuminate the stand's LEDs).  it didn't look good and left me concerned with the exposed connect point.  there were also holes in this area where screws could easily fall through into the monitor's internals.  i really recommend not getting this monitor unless you plan to use it with the integrated stand.

i've had good success with the new Acer models, especially the later versions of these monitors that have had the kinks worked out.  the only thing i didn't like about the 32" 4k Acer IPS was that it 60Hz is just too slow.  it was otherwise a very nicely built monitor.   i settled on a 27" Acer Predator 144Hz (native) XB271HU. my 980ti's won't be able to take advantage of the new dp 1.3/1.4 monitors coming out because the Maxwell cards aren't on the same standard, so this 1440p monitor is the best i can hope for.  it's fast with low (under 4ms) input lag as reviewed by TFTCentral, so it's a good gaming monitor for an IPS.

I have the Acer predator with GSync and the 34 inch widescreen curved and it is just amazing! The only issue I have with this type of screen is that the blacks are not as black as other types and the price was tough as well but besides that this thing is amazing.

I've been doing a lot of reading about them and now I'm kinda scared to get one...seems like 1/3 will work fine the rest will have bad back bleed on any brand / model of ips. Safe bet to stick with panels?

Never had a problem with any of my ips panels, I can't speak for the acer but my ips panels have been great.

not sure what you mean by: "safe bet to stay with panels", they all are "panels" of a certain tech type (i.e. IPS, VA, TN).

it's true that all IPS panel tech has pretty bad contrast ratios (some worse than others).  don't confuse that with back light bleed.  on an entirely black screen it does look washed out compared to a tech (like VA especially) that typically has much better contrast ratios/deeper blacks.  the best IPS contrast ratios are 1000:1 or there about.  compared to VA panels typically in the 3000:1 area.   in the past VA panels were also noticeably slower with poor pixel response time.  i have read recently that AU Optronics (one of the main panel tech companies) has some very fast VA panels on the horizon.  one of their earliest of these super fast panels can be found in the Acer Z35, but the problem is that the pixel response times doesn't make the high refresh (200Hz) practical.

in any case you have to figure out the order of things most important to you.  there are always tradeoffs to be made.  for the vast majority of people TN panel monitors are perfectly fine: they're fast and cheap.   most digital artists want/need true color, so IPS is their tech of choice.

as for BLB, i have a small area in the lower right (which seems to be the common area) of my Acer Predator where a yellowish color comes thru on static black backgrounds.  i never notice it in game or during movies.  it is less observable looking directly at the screen and more so from an angle.  furthermore, the "IPS Glow" is less noticeable while gaming as well.  ymmv depending on how much of a contrast nazi you are.

I don't have any bleeding or anything like the stuff you guys are talking about on my dell ips panels. And I have multiple panels, that are 24" and 30". Is this an acer/asus thing?

i think most ips monitors have a little if you look on a very dark screen but it really isn't much of an issue when using the screen normally at least in my case.

Amazon is good about returning though so I just may return it if I see a better one here locally. I have until the 21st. I also haven't tried this thing with a decent gpu so I am hoping I can try it with my new pc before I decide to return it or not.

I think I'm liking my dell ips monitors more, the more I listen to you guys, too bad dell is no longer competitive on the ips panels for gaming and etc, their loss.

I just recently switched to a ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q for my main monitor, its been incredible so far. Colors look amazing, going to 1440/144hz from 1080/60hz was amazing. If you read reviews on the PG279Q or the Predator XB271hu (the ASUS and ACER 27 inch 1440/144 gsync ips panels) youll end up reading a lot of horror stories about BLB and QC issues, but I personally and everyone I know who's gotten on of those 2 monitors hasnt had any issues and loves it.

I did some tweaking with the settings and it really looks much better now. I have yet to use it with gsync though because current system is and. The predator is a pretty awesome monitor.

your u3014 uses a different back light technology called GB-LED, an enhanced diode/phosphur treatment that gets 98%+ Adobe RGB and 104% NTSC coverage.  basically suped up WLED.   that's why it costs more too.Big%20Smile

as for the perceived lack of IPS Glow it could be that the PWM back light dimming feature in this monitor controls it somewhat.  the problem with the technology is that it can bother people (that's why we see "flicker-free" adverts now) sensitive to it.

the current ultra sharps are using the Samsung PLS panels, which i believe also are GB-LED back lit.

After all the looking and reading, I think I'm going to go with 34" Acer

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016GNX4SE?ref_=ams_ad_dp_asin_2

Only other question is would it be worth going from my two 980s to one 1080?

Did you end up buying the X34?

How do you like it?

I do not have my new pc yet but I bought a single 1080 and i think it should do well with this monitor.

I did but it came with a half of the screen not working, sent it back. Got another one that the top of the screen was pink..so i returned it and now kinda stuck in limbo as i'm trying to decide to get a 1080 or wait for a 1080ti and then try again
