so my rig is in stage one! and I've been sort of thinking about getting a new monitor, especially since I've heard that the newer ones are getting so cheap!
*I can tell that the new trend is to get a widescreen, most of my initial looking for a ~200 dollar monitor is turning up widescreens. Honestly, I'd prefer not to have a widescreen monitor, regaurdless of the trend...
*also I'm wondering where the best color depth is, Flat Panel LCDs seem to be the mainstream, glare is a bit of a problem for the one I have now ,
*and last, through my search for my new video card (8800 GT), I learned about DVI vs VGA out, (yes i know I'm behind the times) my question then, is: what is the real difference between DVI vs VGA, is it like RGB vs Coaxial for TVs? (aka absolutely no difference except how you connect it?)
what I'm looking for:
flat panel or comparably light (not CRT)
21-19 inch
good color depth / framerate
ideally NOT widescreen
$170-$210
no need for more than 1600x1200 res
I'm not looking for some bleeding edge 9000x90000 res 2000fps monitor with more colors than the eye could ever comprehend, im looking for a durable, decent quality monitor that will do my new rig justice (any tips for avoiding glare would be nice as well <3 )
this is what i have right now http://product.ebay.com/Samsung-SyncMaster-175V-Black-17-inch-LCD-Monitor_W0QQfvcsZ2982QQsoprZ52121492 Edited by !ender_ - 17 Nov 2007 at 11:39am |

I will be watching this post with bated breath as I am as we speak searching the web for a replacement for my 19 inch CRT that is about 7 years old and works great.... but its not going to work with the dual 8800 GTX's that are coming in my new DOS system.....
I will post some links if I find anything that may help.

Just curious.... What makes you think the 8800 GTXs won't work with a VGA monitor?

The connections are different, right? Mine does not have a DVI plug. Just the blue one... That wont work with the 8800's, will it?

Most card manufacturers still include VGA/DVI converters. So you will be able to connect your old monitor to your new computer.
VGA is analog and DVI is digital. DVI is the newer technology (standard nowadays) and has the better image but it really isn't noticeable unless you take an extremely old vga monitor and put it side to side with a new dvi monitor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009087 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009109 Edited by skyR - 17 Nov 2007 at 1:07pm |

oK.... Good Info... No answer this, my monitor has the blue plug... My Nvidia card now also has a white and blue plug area. So, on the 8800's I see only DVI connections, right? Where would I plug it in?

when you get your puter, it should come with a small adapter that connects the blue plug to the white connector.

Oops... I re-read your post.... so, there are converters? Do they come with it or something else to buy? LOL..
Seriously, I am thinking to upgrade... here is what I am looking at:
And this is even labled as Certified Windows Vista! Gaming forums give it good reviews, too...
Opinion?

All Samsung products are great =) That monitor can connect with either VGA or DVI too.
http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/productimage/14-130-303-08.jpg This is what most manufacturers include with their cards. You will be getting this stuff with your new Digital Storm computer. You plug the DVI to VGA adapter into the back of your video card and you plug your monitor into the adapter. |

Not true, with just a little more caffeine your body will adjust. You just might not seem normal to everyone else.

It's a good time for buying peripherals with Black Friday right around the corner. I just purchased a Samsung 24" 245BW for $500 not even a month ago. Circuit City will have it on sale for $320 for Black Friday! They have a 24" Acer for $250.
I didn't think there were too many jaw dropping deals worth fighting the crowds and waiting in 3 mile long lines this year but I saw a few things that tweaked my interest. I'm still kicking myself for missing that sale on the Toshiba HD-A2 HD player for $98 plus 5 free movies. The thing was practically free. Bah humbug! |

That Samsung 245BW is what I'm getting my son. Costco regularly has it for $449 with an excellent return policy. The CC price is based on approx. $170 worth of mail in rebates off of their regular $499 price. |

I love Costco! And yes, that price for the 24" Sammy is after MIR. Its a great monitor, I think he'll like it. If you unscrew the 4 back panel screws and remove the bolt you can then turn it to portrait mode. They don't advertise that feature and you don't have to break any seals or anything so it shouldn't void any warranty. But if you want the ability to rotate the monitor from landscape to portrait thats how ya do it.

Where did you confirm this price for the 245BW? I only see the 226bw for a sale price on their site.

http://www.blackfriday.info/search.php?search=24%22+monitor
and another- http://bfads.net/Search/24%22%20monitor/all+all+all/ Screenshot of the ad from Circuit City for 24" Sammy: http://bfads.net/Samsung-24-HD-LCD-Widescreen-Monitor-at-Circuit-City Screenshot of the ad from BestBuy for 24" Acer: http://bfads.net/Acer-24-Widescreen-LCD-Monitor-AL2416WBsd-at-CompUSA Thats also where they show the 24" Acer for $250. If you google "black friday deals" it'll list some sites where you can search for upcoming Black Friday deals. Some companies released their sale prices early, some haven't. Granted it's with a MIR but it's a nice chunk of change your saving. Happy Holiday shopping! Edited by donkeypunch - 18 Nov 2007 at 10:27pm |
