I feel like maybe the time has come again to get a new DS rig.
Here a few things to consider: My primary games in the near future will probably be: War Thunder Squad (built from UE4 engine) Post Scriptum (built from UE4 engine) Hell Let Loose (built from UE4 engine) Pantheon I currently have a 24 inch Asus (1900x1080) monitor. I intend to keep that monitor, but then I'd like to add a bigger & better one. Maybe a 27 inch 2560x1440? I don't know...I don't really know anything about monitors so I'd love suggestions. I feel like my monetary limit is right around $3k. All that being said, here is my build: ******************************************************************************************************* Configuration Code: 1945464 Total Price with Instant Savings: $2,979.00 Direct Load URL: https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1945464 Specifications: Chassis Model: Digital Storm Velox Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7-7820X (8-Core) 3.60GHz Motherboard: MSI X299 SLI PLUS (Intel X299 Chipset) (Up to 3x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 16GB DDR4 3000MHz Digital Storm Performance Series Power Supply: 750W Corsair RM750x (Fully Modular) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: - No Thanks Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (500GB Digital Storm Performance Series) Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (2TB Seagate / Toshiba) Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (VR Ready) <br><strong></strong> Sound Card: Creative Sound BlasterX AE-5 HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H110i GT - 280mm Liquid CPU Cooler (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance) HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Cable Management: Exotic Cable Management - Red - (Cable Combs with Custom Color Sleeved Extension Cables) Chassis Fans: Standard LED Performance Fans (White) Fans Internal Lighting: Remote Controlled Advanced LED Lighting System (Multiple RGB Color Modes) Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stock Factory Turbo Boost Advanced Automatic Overclocking Boost Graphics Card(s): - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: USB Drive - Windows 10 Installation (Format and Clean Install) Virus Protection: Windows Defender Antivirus (Built-in to Windows 10) Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Branded Gear: T-Shirt - Digital Storm - Dark Gray (Large) (L) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 15-20 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) ******************************************************************************************************* Please let me know what you think. Here’s the build I would recommend for gaming.
I swapped to the 8700k cpu, it being better in most areas over the 7820x. Definitely better in gaming. It has better architecture, faster cores, etc. The benefit of the 7800x is quad channel ram and more Pcie lanes for graphics cards. Unless you use 3 or more graphics cards or use apps that make use of wider bandwidth ram, the 7800x has no benefit. I also changed primary drive to the 970 Pro. Many times faster and longer warranty. Put in the gtx 1070 because dropping the x299 build allows it for the same money. I don’t know those games so gtx 1060 might be all you need. Moving to 1440p with more demanding games will make the 1070 a worthwhile addition. Think about the sound card. Motherboard audio today is excellent. Not sure what you have for audio gear. Thanks bprat22. This is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for. You said, "Think about the sound card. Motherboard audio today is excellent. Not sure what you have for audio gear." I don't know a lot about things like this. My thinking was...my headset supports 7.1 sound, but I believe my on-board audio (on my current system) is just "stereo". So I figured that to get the best audio experience, and be able to tell when something is to my left, right, behind me, or in front of me, that I'd want to get a sound card that could take advantage of the 7.1. Am I way off on that? |

Welcome to DS. Just to mention that the Velox has the mobo placed upside down on the right side, the Lumos is opposite with mobo right side up and left facing window. Also the warranty is just 1 year parts and you listed W10Pro and bprat22 has it with Home. He is the best. A few of us here use 1440/144 monitors of every brand with Acer and Asus mentioned a lot. If you are going to upgrade the monitor make sure you also go with bprat22's suggestion as to the gpu. Keep us posted as to what you get.

That motherboard is 7.1 audio capable. That said, I’ve never tried anything more than 2.1 so can say if it would be what you want.
You could try it without the sound card and add one later if it doesn’t rock your world. |

Hoserator brings up a good point that we don’t always mention.....one case has a left window and the other a right window. Your desk setup might make the decision for you.
I went with Lumos for the window on left. |

Thanks for all of the replies everyone!
So far, I am leaning toward just going with bpratt's build, the one exception being that I'm going to change the tower to the Lumos. That is something I had not realized until you guys pointed it out. It is pretty important to me that the window is on the LEFT side. I definitely agree about the sound card -- I'll go without one for now, and I can always get one later if I feel the need. As for Win10Pro vs Win10Home -- Are there any decent benefits to going with PRO? Or should I just get Win10Home? Hoserator -- you mentioned the warranty just being 1 year parts. Can you clarify? As best I can tell the warranty is the same on my original build and bpratt's built -- 3 year labor/1 year part. Or am I missing something? Do you guys usually pay the extra money for the longer warranty? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions. I really do appreciate your help! Once I get all this ironed out, I'll be sure to post my final build one last time before I pull the trigger. Just to make sure I didn't miss something. |

IMHO you've made some great decisions.
The standard warranty is 1 yr parts/3yrs labor. Emphasis on parts because most of us wouldn't send our rig back to DS just for free labor when most parts can be swapped out by the user with help from a friend or YouTube. The shipping wouldn't be free. For me, I don't much care to pay for extended warranties. IMO, almost any defective part will fail within the first year and be covered. After that long it's more likely than not parts will last a good while. Most of the name brand (not DS branded) parts have longer warranties from the manufacturers, and they will stand behind their product. It looks like we both got a DS system in 2010. Mine is still kicking with all the original parts today! How 'bout yours? (I did get a new system in January, though.) Worst case scenario is something goes down after 2 years and it's not on warranty at least you get to swap out a newer tech for the failed part. That's my take. |

I recently ordered my new DS rig, at Stage 7, and picked the Lumos case for the window facing and also selected the extra cost 2 year parts warranty. Most parts have 3 years or more manufacturers warranty but I like making a single call to DS and getting it troubleshot and new part sent. No RMA from others. I’ve troubleshot my own problems and just had DS verify, but that’s me.
My present rig did lose the graphics card within warranty, DA sent me another, so the warranty was worth it. Warranty is like insurance.....you hope it’s a waste of money but there just in case. |

I tend to agree with bprat22 with regards to warranties. I don't go for the extended service ones but with this kind of purchase I go for a little longer parts warranty (like bprat22 and Cretae state, we do most of the labor anyway, just need the parts). One year is gone before you know it.

Cretae -- My 2010 purchase was actually a gaming laptop. I stopped using that about 2 years ago. My first DS gaming desktop computer was purchased in late 2011, and I have really been satisfied with it. The only thing I've done was upgrade the video card about 2 years ago.
Everyone -- I've come up with what I am hoping is my final build. Please let me know if you see anything that I am missing, or any bad decisions I might be making. I pretty much used the build that bprat22 had given me, with the following exceptions: Removed the sound card Changed the case to Lumos White LED performance fans Stage 1: Overclock CPU - Up to 4.7GHz on All CPU Cores OS Boost Microsoft Windows 10 Professional I figured I'd spend the few extra dollars on the LED fans, the OS boost, and Win10PRO since I was saving a lot of money by downgrading the tower from the Velox to the Lumos, and by removing the sound card. And the Stage 1 CPU Overclock is FREE. Looks good to me.
I have no idea what they “tweak” in OS boost but it comes clean already and wouldn’t think it’s worth it, but it is what it is. |

I think the OS tweak is an artifact from times when Windows Aero and other processes would eat into the limited amount of RAM systems came with. I don't think there's any issue coming from the OS that really needs tweaking. But, I do think Win 10 is complex enough that if you found something is turned off that you would prefer to have, you'd have a heckova time trying to figure out what and where!
Because the 8700k already achieves 4.7 and 4.6 GHz on the first two (gaming) cores, some knowledgeable contributers have said any overclock is unnecessarily boosting the core voltage for very little benefit. Just so you know. IMO, it's probably not a big deal, but why bother? Everything else looks aces! |

Overclocking the processor does put the speed, let's say 4.8, on all 6 cores as opposed to one core at 4.7, 2 cores at 4.6, et. I don't think the benefit is there for most gaming, applications, but as time goes on, and you add more powerful cards down the road, it might be less prone to bottleneck. That's said, bottle-necking isn't all that detrimental in most cases. You will get more heat from overclocking but with the right cooler it 's perfectly fine. I went back and forth when ordering my latest rig, and finally just opted for no oc'ing. Can always do it yourself later. No wrong answer here. |

Now that I have my new DS PC ordered, I am getting a new monitor. I have one that I have found on Amazon that I'd like to get some opinions on...just to see if I am getting a decent one. I'd like to post a link to the monitor but figured I'd better ask if that is allowed first.
So is it ok if I link a monitor from Amazon on here? |

Here are the monitors I am looking at getting to go with my DS system (shown above).
I need to select one. (of course I'm open to look at other monitors if anyone knows of better deals) IPS Monitor w/ 4ms response time TN Panel Monitor w/ 1ms response time *Note -- I will be playing a lot of FPS type games. Go with the IPS. Better color, saturation. TN does have faster response by the numbers but reality is IPS works great.

I have a 1070 also, if that's what you ended up getting. I would LOVE to know how well your card handles that monitor! IMO, it's gonna do quite well enough, but there are those who think it could stumble a bit in a few games.

Now you have me scared...lol.
This monitor could possibly be too much for my video card? That is an awful lot of money to spend only to find out that I can't use it -- or I can use it but it hampers me when playing multiplayer first-person-shooters (which is mostly what I play) Hmmm.... |

Hopefully Pantheon handles the large raids much better than previous games of this type. I'm not sure how the testing went so far in the beta, but for anything @ 1440 or above resolution, I would go with a 1080 just to be on the safe side and for future proofing.
Years ago I was part of the EQ beta and continued playing it for a few years after its release, but just got tired of the game. Raiding was more of a second job where you were always hurrying up and waiting. The original lead programmer for EQ, Brad McQuade(not sure if I spelled it right), is the same individual who created Pantheon. |

Well, I think I'm a little too far along to get the 1080 now. I have already passed Stage 5. But I'm ok with that. To be honest, I could never see myself doing any raiding in Pantheon (or any other MMORPG). I just don't have the time (or desire to put in the effort) for raids. |

I'm still waiting for my Bolt X to arrive, it shipped this past friday and is due here THIS Friday (the waiting is really hard to bare....I'm clocking a month now without a gaming rig...LOL) ANYWAY your IPS selection is the Acer Predator 27".... I also just got an Acer Predator, but I got the 32" model (2560 x 1440) . Unfortunately I can't vouch for game performance I just have this laptop and this laptop doesn't have Display port and I'm too lazy to get my HDMI cable out of the closet. My old pc does work though (just it can't run games) I tested the monitor with some colorful wallpapers, some youtube videos and even a netflix movie....GORGEOUS. Absolutely beautiful...I did have to adjust some settings out of the box but its OSD with the control stick makes adjusting/fine tuning the monitor settings a breeze. I believe my screen is the same as the one you listed literally the only difference is mine is the larger screen (and its curved). In any regard monitor looks great, can't wait to be able to play games with it. |

Relax. I think that card is the right one for that monitor, just not a lot of headroom (overkill) is all. The $ difference in a 1080 is just too much to "safeguard" against a poorly optimized game here, or the BIG DEAL game at the end of 2019 there, IMO. You'll be running on high with virtually everything for quite awhile, I think. |

I'll be honest, I've bought from Digital Storm before and was very satisfied with my experience. They seem to be a great company and of course that is what keeps me coming back.
BUT...that is not the ONLY thing that compels me to continue to buy from DS. So much of it is this community. There is no other boutique builder that I have seen that has such a helpful bunch of people, willing to walk people like me through the whole process. Digital Storm Employees + Great Community = Great Buyer's Experience Thanks for every single bit of help & feedback from every one of you. |

I would steer clear of Pantheon then. As I said, the individual that developed Everquest is the same one behind Pantheon, and the game is heavily dependent on groups in order to progress through it(leveling up and acquisition of better equipment). I haven't played Pantheon, but from my past experience with EQ, its not a game I would recommend unless you have a lot of time on your hands(i.e. 6-8 hrs. weekdays and 12+ hrs. on weekends) and are already affiliated with a dedicated group of gamers with similar schedules. EQ had the major issue of spawn camping, which made it difficult to get better equipment for your character, which in turn could hinder you being accepted into groups. It was a vicious cycle, especially if you didn't have the time to put into improving your character compared to the hard-core gamers. I recall Brad's mentality when it came to character equipment. He had stated something along the lines of, "Buying a full set of equipment, for example, basic plate armor for a warrior in EQ will be the equivalent of buying a Learjet in real life." just prior to the beta phase if I recall correctly. Some people enjoyed the game, but I ended up hating not being able to log in and getting down to business, so to speak, due to all of the spawns being camped, waiting for spawns to reset, group openings, etc. Reminded me too much of Organic Chemistry II labs: hurry up and wait. |
