Topic: Need advice on 1080 SLI Posted: 27 May 2016 at 7:06am |
Hey all, I'm looking into configuring a 1080 SLI system, but I'm having trouble keeping it within my budget. Maybe that's not possible at this time, but I figure you might have a better way of putting together this thing than I do.
Budget: 3k, but willing to go a bit higher to make it work Expectations: 4K gaming and VR. Usage: See above Specifications: I'd like to use the i7 6700K and 2 1080s. Apart from that, I don't have too many other concerns about parts. Overclocking would be nice, but not required. If the Founders Edition is going to keep pushing me above 3k (the best I've been able to configure, so far, is about 3,284 before shipping), then maybe I'll have to wait. But maybe you wizards can do way better than me. Thanks for any help/advice! |

Hi Vertebreaker. Try this config. Just a tad over your budget but gives you the sli 1080 and 6700k processor.

The HDD I always recommend the Western Digital Black for another $29. I did make some compromisers to hit your budget, but none that impact its performance or fun. Hope this helps and good luck. |

I would possibly swap out the case for a Corsair Carbide Series Air 540 over that 450D. And the AIR 540 is cheaper. Since we are only water cooling the CPU with an AIO, a better air optimized case will pair nicely with the blower style coolers on those cards. Plus it has plenty of room in case you want to 1.) Add more Hardware and 2.) Watercool your GPU's in the future. I'd probably recommend upgrading your case fans too, to nicer fans... but Corsair does actually give you decent stock fans.

Yep, the Air 540 is an excellent alternative. Either work with reference cards. The air 540 is actually one of my favorites on the site, but recommended the Corridium for a more traditional looks..

Thanks so much for the build. Two questions:
1. Is the 8GB of RAM too low for future-proofing myself? I was assuming 16GB would be a solid choice for ensuring I don't need an upgrade for the next 5+ years, which is absolutely my hope. I assume they come in 2x4GB, or is it one 8GB stick? 2. I'm okay with the extra price for the 1000W over the 850W. Is it worth making the leap, just to be safe? Thanks again! You'll be fine for now. If you have 16GB of ram, running Windows 7 or newer, you'll at most (on average.. lol) use ~8GB of ram, give or take 1GB. If you only have 8GB you'll use around 4-6GB and idle at 1-3GB. WHen you have more memory, Windows takes the pleasure of increase the page file and just using more to use it because it's there. It should be a 1x8GB stick of ram. You can also request that to make sure. Then just save up the $40 or whatever and buy a matching DS branded 8GB in the future that they'd probably mail to you. And ram is extremely easy to install. |

I think the 850 watt psu is fine unless you start pushing over clocks on both CPU and the cards. The 980ti in sli has a recommended 1000watt psu, and the 1080 uses much less. If you can, go 1000 watt and never look back, but the 850 is good imho.

Agreed. With the low power consumption of the 1080's, a 1000w will be 100% future proof for you in terms of 1080 sli and overclocking. |

Alright guys, I pulled the trigger on bprat's build, except I swapped in the Air 540 case and the 1000W PSU. The 540 actually helped bring down the shipping cost, so that was nice.
Thanks again for your insight, especially to bprat for once again helping me. You were one of the first to respond way back in 2013 (as seen here) when I was new to Digital Storm. That Vanquish is still doing pretty dang well; I definitely made the right choice. So, thanks for having my back once again. See you in 5 years for the next one. |

Our pleasure and Congrats on a real nice rig.
Good choices, the Air 540 and power supply. You're gonna love it. Have fun. |
