Hello! I will buying another Digital Storm this new year and wanted to get some advice from you experts.
Here is my setup so far: https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1525046 My budget is 5k. My last DS computer lasted a solid 7 years. I'm hoping for another 7 with this one. Please let me know what is overkill or not enough. I plan on sticking with 1080p but will do VR. and looking for a long lasting video card with good vram. 1080p doesn't need much these days but I'm thinking for the future. Thank you for your help everyone! A few questions: Power Supply? overkill? under? 6 Process cores good for about 7 years? Just 4 cores or go with 8 maybe? Motherboard Good? Cooling enough? Do I need a Sound Card? Is motherboard sound good enough? I have a 5.1 speaker setup. Edited by Vin Vicious - 25 Nov 2016 at 12:09pm |

Hi Vin...your build is definitely overkill for gaming on a 1080p or even if you stepped up to a 1440p. You won't use more than 16gb ram, don't need more than a 4 core and the Titan X is for 4K.
Here's a build that saves you some money, gives you plenty and the gtx 1080 gives you room to go 1440p at higher settings. This assumes a gaming rig and no heavy video editing, etc. Configuration Code: 1532190 Total Price with Instant Savings: $2,859.00 Direct Load URL: https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1532190 Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Corsair Carbide Quiet 600Q Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz (Codename Skylake) (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS Z170-PRO GAMING (Intel Z170 Chipset) (Up to 5x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Digital Storm Performance Series Power Supply: 750W EVGA SuperNOVA <br><strong></strong> Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) (Internal) Storage Set 1: 1x SSD M.2 (512GB Samsung 960 PRO) (NVM Express) (BACKORDERED ETA End of November) <br><strong></strong> Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (1TB Western Digital - Black Edition) <br><strong></strong> Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce GTX 1080 8GB (EVGA ACX 3.0) (VR Ready) <br><strong></strong> Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H115i - 280mm Liquid CPU Cooler (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance) <br><strong></strong> HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Cable Management: Premium Cable Management (Strategically Routed & Organized for Airflow) Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock CPU - Up to 4.4GHz (Depends on Cooling and Motherboard) <br><strong></strong> Boost Graphics Card(s): - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Factory Reset Feature (Restore Windows + Drivers) (Partition up to 50GB of Storage) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) The 750 watt psu is all you need unless you planned to sli, which also isn't needed. Thank you! I guess I was over thinking what would be needed for 4-7 years from now.

It's tough trying to figure 4-5 years down the line. Other than the video card, and faster storage everything else has moved slower than most think. CPU is usually good for 5-6 years and the video card, 3 years or so.

Then maybe I should get the titanx card? I doubt I'll care for a 4k monitor but I do want to do VR. Do you think getting it for VR alone and future proofing would be worth it?
If I were to upgrade my monitor to 4k, how would this setup with the titan hold up? any bottlenecks with ram or processor? Cooling? Which power supply should I get if I use a titan instead of gtx1080? Thank you for helping. :) |

You don't need the Titan X Pascal for VR, but if you plan on going 4K then it's a good pick. You could also wait until early next year for the 1080ti. Rumor is, it'll be close to the Titanx for a lot less money. The Titan X is expensive for its 20-25% bump over the 1080, but it is geared for 4K.
The psu is fine for the TitanX and so are the CPU, cooling, etc. So you don't waste your money you should decide what you want in a monitor for the next 2-3 years. Graphics cards are only going to get more powerful if history is an indicator, and buying a card now for maybe what you do in 2-3 years is a waste. |
