    Posted: 15 Jun 2009 at 10:23pm

I am looking to get a new computer and so far I have liked what I have seen from digital storm....they have a new $500 dollar off promotion and I'd like to get the best computer available for the money with price/performance some what in mind.  Any suggestions with my below config, I usually get a new computer once every 3-4 years, so I only want the 3 year warrenty.  I got a Dell XPS 710H2C 3 years ago and I want to make a significant performance jump.  I currently have 2XSLI 8800GTX on the Dell but can not get the resoultions/performance I am looking for.   I plan to get either the Dell or Samsung $1000+ monitor some place else and use the best 2560 x 1600 resoultion for gaming.   Let me know what you think and if is a good investment.   I figure that I would rather have high airflow for the 3 way SLI then water, as I do not want to change out fluid and I want to have the option to upgrade the video cards easily.   I also want the fastest possible consumer hard drive, as I hate waiting due to a bottleneck.   Let me know what you think.   I want the best gaming sound card because I might hook it up to my $10k+ 7.1 surround system.      Aiming to get it around $4500 for the total cost of the computer not including the monitor, as it appears that DS does not charge shipping or tax to GA.    Thanks for your help in advance.

Price after current discount $4,590.00

drop the ram to 1333mhz and make it 3x gtx 275's and your good, the 275 is the 285 killer.

why the 3 way 275 vs. 285....I thought the 285 is a lot faster and the 2GB edition will give me some kind of room to grow the next couple of years, will I not see much of difference when gaming at 2560 x 1600?

the 285 gets 4 fps more than the 275 and cost 100 more and the 2gb version wont be useful for another 10 years games dont even use 1gb.

So in a tri setup, would I get 12fps more....lol.  Thanks for the heads up.  I thought it was more then that.  I could get the 285 1GB edition though and still beat my budget.

So I wonder if it would be worth it to go with 3 way SLI 285 1GB with 3 way water cooling for the GPUS which would put the system around an even $5000, would that allow me to overclock the GPUs enough so that I could get 60fps on, 2560 x 1600  with 4XAA/16XAF settings in Crysis Warhead and similar games

nothing is gonna give you 60 fps in crysis at 2560 x 1600.

what is your ticket number?

and no you won't get 12 fps with 3 x 285 vs 3 x 275, the difference is like 4 fsp in one card, as you go sli the difference becomes less and less. in short with 3 x 285 will pay more but will not see what you paid more for.

Thanks for the update, when you say to not go with the Intel SSD, can you recommend another that has close the specs.  I saw the 120 OCZ SSD might be a good one, but it is not recommended by DS on their website and I currently use 150 GB for my OS and a couple of games.  So I know I will need more then 120 but not much for my boot drive.  Also, do you know if DS optimize the SSD for Windows, as I hear that is required to get the X25-M to function properly.  I currently have 2 Velcioraptors 300GB each in RAID 0 on my XPS system and want an improvement on that setup.   Thanks again for your help.

Also, is it worth it to do the LC on the 275?  I think that might only be required if you want to get close to world record terrority with 3 285 SLI.   How much benefit will I see when I try to overclock the 275 at max settings?

Also, I have thought about doing 3X60 OCZ drives in RAID 0 which is $100 more then then the X25 but I think would be crazy fast and outperform 1 160GB Intel SSD by a large margin.  Thoughts on this as well?

I guess go with OCZ 250GB, all you need for SSD to run on windows is the latest firmware. optimizing here is referred to disabling defrag and such, there is no real optimization going on.

SSDs have faster seektime then Veloci and raid doesn't improve seektime enough to make a big enough difference.

in games you won't notice the difference between sli 275 and 285, if its benchmarks you are after thats a different story but in real time use, you won't notice the difference.

if you can LC the GPUs, it will help with heat.

at 4k read and write, nothing will touch Intel x25m and x25E is even a faster beast of course.

the 120GB and 250GB OCZ have better wear and tear then their smaller brothers and they are faster.

Does that mean that your going to take your 2 velociraptors out of your old system and add them into your new system with the new SSD?

For $10 more why not upgrade to lightscribe Drive?
If you already have an amazing sound system and are going to buy an awesome monitor, are you sure you don't wanna add a blu-ray drive?

bluray is a waste of money and cost alot, he also said he needs more then 160GB which is why I recommended the 250GB ocz instead, his money would be better spent by droping the bluray and going with 250GB ocz.

Alright, yeah that's why I didn't add any other hard drives.

The one 250gb OCZ SSD for windows and other stuff, then the 2 300 gb velociraptors in RAID 0 would be a zoomin setup.  But why no Lightscribe DVD/CD RW drive?

a regular DVD/CD RW will do, the lightscribe requires special CDs. you can drop a lightscribe in there anytime he wants, if he wants it.

I think he is keeping the raid in the other system.

I already have pretty much the best solution for movies, or atleast it was 5 months ago.  That is for my 60" Pioneer Kuro 6020FD professionally configured so that it is identical to the Elite addition and an awesome Pio elite reference bluray player with that sound system I mentioned earlier.  I actually hate going to watch a movie anywhere else now.  So no need for a bluray player.  I just read an article that two OZC RAID 0 will outperform one intel drive hands down.  I actually only need around 135- 50 GB  so I could go with the Intel no problem but I think the OCZ 3 way RAID 0 at 60 GB would really be awesome and be around the same price as the intel and get me 20GB more.    Also, do I need 3way SLI with overclocking to get great frame rates with the monitor I plan to use from Samsung or Dell?   I am thinking that the extra money spent on water could go to something else, unless their is a clear overclocking advantage.

Yeah my wife wants my old computer, she loves the new raptors I put in it and it works for the games she likes to play.  It is just not that great for gaming eveb at 1600X1200 with gamer settings on Crysis Warhead, I get lock ups and other issues after playing for more then 30 minutes.  So I am looking to get a new one now, but I just don't want to spend much more then 4500.  I see that you can get near the best computer available for that, I am just not sure if the water cooled video cards will provide a benefit and if I should just stick to the intel or go with 2-3 OZC 60GB in raid 0.  My understanding is, if I do the 3 RAID 0, I will be approaching the SATA II I/O limits.

I'm unsure of how much extra overclocking the 275's will get you,  Liquid cooling will definitely be quieter, and you at least need cpu liquid cooling for your CPU if you want it OC'd to 4.0-4.2ghz.  And I also fear your expectations may be too high, nothing out right now, overclocked or not, will run Crysis all settings very high 2560X1600 with full AA and AF at 60 fps.  I'm moderately sure it will run it at 1920X1200 at very high with possible some AA and AF at around 35 fps, DST will correct me if I'm wrong because im sure he knows the correct benchmarks.  Crysis is a true monster, this setup will absolutely destroy every game on the market, and make Crysis very playable.  And it will look sexy as hell too Ouch

one Intel = reliability and less chance of data loss involved with raid, my personal opinion is get a intel x25-extreme and only liquid cool the cpu the graphics cards get hot but with dx 11 coming out later on upgrading all the blocks would be a great hassle and cost that is why just leave the stock cooler and if your playing at 1600x1200 one 275 is more than enough but if you go higher to 1920 2 in sli is good and 2560 needs 3 that is all.

Thanks for your input, I have thought about Intel for a long time, I had to RMA the Intel 80GB addition though which turned me slightly off on them.   I am not really worrried about losing data, as I like to perform clean installs every 6 months and eventually will do that with Win7.    This will be purely a gaming rig and my thought is 3 60GB OCZ drives will outperform the 160GB drive and cost just as much.   I am only concerned with the best performance possible, so I think that setup would make sense but would like to hear if OCZ is really bad or something like that. :)   Also, how long are they projecting until Direct X 11, if it is only two-three months, then it might be better to wait.  Although, most games these days do not even fully support directx 10.   Also, since I am not trying to set any overclocking records, why should I get the classified addtion?

the articles you have read didn't compare 4k read and write nor did they compare iops.

the Intel offered here is the x25m and not x25E, the x25E is $400 just for the 30GB.

the Intel is better in wear and tear and in read and write it in the long run will kill your raid of 3 x 60GB, I was originally gonna do the same then realized it was pointless.

raid will only help with load times, so your raid vs one 250GB OCZ or 160GB Intel will not make any difference in frame rates, just game load times, which with the SSD its already going to be fast.

OCing the 275s will produce little performance and lot of heat, and you won't notice the difference in performance either.

as for LC on GPUs they are using the quick-release valves to make changing GPUs easy.

you need the classified edition due to all the gpus and sound card adn etc you want, no other board will fit all that.

its compeletly pointless to wait for DX11 cards as there are not going to be any DX11 games anytime soon. by next year you would be lucky if a couple of games use it.

AbsiNthe is right nothing will run crysis at highest settings at 2560 x 1600, 3 x 275, 3 x 285 and quad sli 295 will all give you 23 fps to 27 fps in crysis at that resolution.

Thanks DST4ME, why are you recommending the Specialized LC verus the high performance LC or upgraded air cooling for 3 video cards?  I am still not sold on the LC for the video cards from a performance/value standpoint, is it mostly a stablility issue with that many cards, as you have said it is not worth overclocking.  I see what you are saying about the RAID with SSD, as it creates issues in many reports I have read.  I will probably go with the Intel 160 SSD now and the classified SLI.  I kind of feel like that I need to get the 1600 MHZ RAM, as it is only a $70 buck difference, is there really no difference in gaming from upgrading the RAM clock speed?

are you refering to dual loop LC vs single loop?

dual loop means the gpus get their own rad, pump, and the cpu will get its own rad and pump, this means each loop will have much better temps.

put 3 gpus and a cpu on a the same loop and that is lot of heat for the loop to deal with, your cpu and gpu temps underload will not be very good.

above 1200 x 1000 resolution ram speed will make zero difference in games.

LC for the gpus is only recommended for temps, 3 gpus in one case underload will put out some heat, but its up to you, you don't have to go LC on gpu.

if you like drop LC on gpus and instead upgrade the fans.

Thanks, yeah it might make more sense to go with the GPU cooling for me...but it sounds like I either need to go dual loop or upgraded fans.  As far as monitors, do you recommend the one DS sells on here?  I can't really find it much cheaper any where else, although I have heard good reviews on the Dell 30" which is selling for $300 dollars cheaper and appears to have fast response types.  Not sure if you game at resolutons greater the 1920X1200 though.

the 30" dell has a resolution of 2560 x 1600, I would go with that if you gonna spend that much money, otherwise why do you need 3 GPUs? for 1900 x 1200 all you need is 2 GPUs.

if you gonna go with 1900 x 1200 res then I would drop one of the GPUs and go with 2 x 275, at which point you don't' need LC at all for GPUs and you can just air cool the 2 GPUs. 2 GPUs under load put out lot less heat then 3 GPUs under load.

just LC the CPU
