Budget:
$4000. > $7000. Expectations Same as everyone else. Future proof for a few years. Run most all games at highest setting if desired, et cetera. Usage: Wasting the little free time I have by gaming Special Needs: Need it now. Saved ticket: 1853103 Specifications: https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1853103 **updated to reflect adjusted build** Only concern is what to do about SSD's. I'm not going to raid and I don't need 2 TB of space so...get the second one installed now and use as clone and unplug it from system (crazy) or just get one 1TB SSD and a external drive to clone to for back up?? Thoughts. Edited by shot - 21 Feb 2018 at 1:39pm |

If this is strictly a gaming rig then I would save big bucks and go with the Z370 chipset and the 8700k cpu. Gaming cares mostly for single, maybe dual core and the 12 core you picked will have nothing to do. In fact it will be slower than less cores, like the 6 core 8700k Plus your chipset platform, the X299 has the advantage of quad core ram vs dual core Z370, but you won't see the benefits fpr the vast majority of games. The 8700k Turbos to 4.7 Ghz vs the 7920 4.4. Games like speed over core count.
16GB ram is all you need, but 32gb won't hurt, so up to you. The 750 watt psu is good to go, but I agree and would get the 850watt. I don't RAID , but unless you do critical tasks that demand mirroring I would think just doing a backup or clone on occasion is all you need. But, I've never looked into RAID. The advantage of backup/clone is that the drive can be external, away from any internal issues that might cause issues. Change the cpu cooler to the Corsair H115i. A very good unit, you know what you're getting, and comes with Corsair's 5 year warranty. The DS branded only has whatever warranty your rig had, 1 year parts unless you up it. Hope this helps. |

Good info. Ty. Which board with that chipset would you look at?

I’d love to post a config, but can’t where I am, so go to the Lumos config, first 8th gen selection, Ultimate build and go from there. The Asus Rog Strix or MSI Pro Carbon are a good way to go. They aren’t the cheapest, which I tend to skip over, and have sli support just in case. They all however are decent selections. They are Z370 chipsets for the 8700k cpu.
Maybe later I can post a config. |

I'm going to edit my original post with a new build # which will reflect some changes.
Since I'm not going to raid my hard drives I don't see a reason to have redundant 1TB 960 pro SSD M.2 drives. Unless someone has opinions otherwise I am fine with one and can clone that to an external drive.? The changes to the build are as follows: Processor i7 8700k 3.7 and then boost it to 4 and change. 16GB system memory. Titan XP 12GB GPU. The corsair H115i 280mm cooling. |

In my first post I mentioned quad core ram with that mobo.....meant to say quad channel ram, meaning wider bandwidth.

The Titan XP is a waste of money for gaming and most apps. The gtx 1080 Ti is about the same performance for lots less. The original Titan cards with mega vram were for scientific calculations, heavy video editing and forecasting apps. That was the original reason for the Titan, not as much now, but gamers fell in love with the name TITAN and felt the name justifies the card. Vram isn’t over the top anymore but still the 1080 Ti works great.

I do agree with that assessment on the GPU and common sense will have me adjust the build and save a few dollars.
I edited my original post and posed a question about he duplicate SSD's. Would love to hear your thoughts. ***updated build # to reflect GPU. SSD's still noodling.*** Edited by shot - 21 Feb 2018 at 1:40pm |

The build looks good to me. I don’t think we talked monitor resolution, so if it’s a1920x1080, the gtx 1070 or 1070 ti will Max everything out. For 1440p at 144hz or 4k, the 1080 Ti is the answer.
I personally would just get the size SSD you need and use an external for cloning. If you have 2x m.2 drives installed, removing one after a backup could be a major pain. They socket unplug from the mobo and might have the gpu in your way. You could go m.2 drive for primary and a regular SATA SSD as backup that unplugs very easily or an HDD. |

Do I need to up the power supply since I'm upgrading the motherboard for future possible use?
Sry. I didn't mention the display. 30" 2560x 1600 Thanks for the advice. All very helpful. This should be my final build... https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1853175 Edited by shot - 21 Feb 2018 at 3:39pm |

Power supply is overkill. All you need is the 750, but the 850 is fine. The MSI Pro Carbon is a much better board for very little extra. You won't need the CPU overclock for gaming as the first core already turbos to 4.7, and the second to 4.6. I understand that the OC raises your voltage a little higher than necessary for very small gain you'd never notice. I know it's free, but....
Everything else looks fine to me. Priority build a bit pricey IMHO, but I'm the patient type. |
