Topic: New Config - Bolt 3 Posted: 27 May 2016 at 7:01am |
Look for input/recommendations from the group on this config for my son. This is my first build and I'm trying my best to get him a solid machine, with future upgradability, but not break the bank. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Two immediate questions i have are: - is overclocking of the the new 1080 founders edition recommended? - is GPU liquid cooling needed with the 1080 founders edition as it has an upgraded cooler already? Regards and much appreciated.... Hi HOMERC.... that Bolt build looks excellent. I don't overclock video cards, but other enthusiasts on the site will smack me for it.
Putting the video card on liquid isn't necessary, but does keep it a few degrees cooler and allows for easier overclocking if that's your thing. It does look great, however. Whether you run the card at 70c or 45c doesn't effect performance. Keeping the card cooler might help keep the noise down which is another consideration for liquid cooling but, again, not necessary . Other than the cost, liquid cooling the cards does have some nice advantages. The disadvantages are cost, small chance of more issues and a little more work if you had to swap the card. Looks good and stay in touch. |

With the new GTX 1080 cards, you either need to keep the fans speed high (80%+) or run it hot (87degreeC+) to keep it from thermal throttling and reducing clock speeds to the base card speeds. Water cooling the card will allow it to run at full boost without a loud fan or letting your silicon run hotter.
I'd recommend changes like adding the GPU into the loop, changing the OS drive to the 950 Pro, removing the stage 1 overclock (the multicore enhancement on the motherboard already does it), going with stock fans, and removing the airflow control board (not needed). https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1420548 |
