Topic: New DS computer - DVD will not open Posted: 21 Feb 2017 at 10:23am |
I received my new digital storm computer at the end of January. Everything works well except the DVD <E drive> will not open. I just tried to open it. I opened the case and checked the connections to the drive and the motherboard and they seemed fine, but I reset them anyway. I see the DVD RW drive shows up as a device, but cannot open it or eject. Device manager says the device is working correctly. I must be doing something wrong. Couple of things you can try....If the drive has a small pinhole in the front, insert a bent paper clip into it to release the drive. usually. once it releases once you're good to go.
Go to File Explorer by clicking Win Logo lower left, select the FE icon, click on This PC, right click the drive and select eject. You might have to unplug the pc, hold in the power on button for several seconds, plug back in and try. In Device Manager click on Scan for hardware changes icon in top task bar. Worse case, in Device manager right click the drive, Uninstall, reboot and let Windows reinstall it. Hope this does it. |

Making sure I have the right section: in Device Manager after click on Scan for hardware changes icon I get no response, just a quick blink of the icon. For the DVD/CD-ROM drive icon there is only the check for hardware change and properties on the first window popup. When I check the > next to the DVD/CD-ROM drive icon this opens up - HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GA5ON. When I right click I see update driver, disable, uninstall..etc. Do I uninstall this one?

Yes, when you expanded the DVD drive in DM by clicking" >", it now shows your DVD. Right click that and try a driver update first. If no good, then I would uninstall it, power off, reboot and see if Windows loads it. Or, use the Scan for Hardware to find it.
You can also double click it first and see if it states working correctly. Although, it always says that from my experience. |

Before doing that ^. try pushing a couple of times in on the tray as you try to use it. Or tap it while trying to open it. Sometimes if a disc was left in it, it jams or just messes things up.

Driver update shows it has the latest driver. Did an uninstall, powered off, reboot and DVD and all were reinstalled. Did the pushing and tapping on the tray but still no go. Seems I will download any program I want to add.
thanks |

Get in touch with DS. If it's still in the 30 or 45 days window, not sure which, they'll send you a new one...no cost to you. First they would have to verify the problem. Who knows, maybe they'll fix it over the phone.

ROFL. Well I learned something new today. Tech support informed me taht the slim drive installed on the Velox does not have a tray to open, it is a slot-loader like in a car stereo unit. When you push the button and light flashes then insert your disc with label side to the right.
So I looked again more carefully, and voila, there is a car stereo-like slot for a disk. |

Funny thing is, I knew the Velox had the slot DVD but just never put it together. I kinda zoned out on my tray loader.
Now, if you're like me, you won't use it for 6 months. |
