Budget:
2700-3300 Expectations: Gaming PC with duel monitors to play games for next 5 years Usage: WoW, The Division, overeatch, etc. Hello, My 5 year old computer crashed with a motherboard failure yesterday and rather than try to build one myself i will pay to have a new one built right. I dont know much about computer components and I mostly game (WoW). I do live in arizona so cooling is important to during long gaming sessions. Thank you in advance for your advice and help. Hi Flamegineer.... Welcome to the forums.
I would make a couple of changes, to give you better components. Change the 750watt b1 psu for the other EVGA 750watt. A better, more efficient power supply with much longer warranty. Change the HDD to the Western Digital Black for $19 extra. Also a more reliable unit with longer warranty. Go with the Strix version of the 980ti. It's a quieter, better component version of the reference cards. It's 0 rpm fans only go on when needed. It does empty more heat into the case as opposed to the reference single fan card, but the Apollo can handle it as a single card setup. Either will work great, so no bad choices. Hope this helps and good luck. |

Welcome to the forums! You definitely made a great choice in deciding to go with DS. I bought a laptop 3 years ago from them that is still going strong and just bought my new beast of a desktop. I agree with bpratt about going with the Asus Strix card. Especially if you plan to put it under water like your build says. It is a beast of a card and super easy to OC. If you look in the hardware subforum you can see some benchmark results from db188 and myself.

Thank you both. I was also curious if duel video cards are needed nowadays. I know the cooling system i picked has only one gpu but i dont think i could swing duel gpu cooling option.
For my money would duel gpu and a cpu only water cooling system be better over a water cooled cpu/single gpu? I am curious after reading about duel gpus on the forums. Thank you again for the wuick response. |

Since your primary game is WoW I would personally go for CPU w/ 1xGPU w/ the liquid cooling. You can easily OC the card to get great performance out of it and if you want you can always add a second card later. The cards still perform well on just air but will be louder due to the fans. |

I agree with SnowandSand. Unless you're getting into a 4k monitor and more demanding games the single 980 ti is all you need. If you game on a single 1080p even a 970/980 will work great, but the ti does give you more longevity.
Water vs Air with gpu.... Both work. Under water the card can be quieter and run better performance if you oc it. But, with air, you'll still get great performance and not have to worry about the tubing, waterblock, etc if you ever adding on or needed to replace it. I personally, and just me, would leave the 980ti Strix on air because I wouldn't be pushing it and I like simple for less issues. That's today. Every once in a while I think about putting the next card on liquid so ..... |

Guys,
Thank you for you help in explaining the 1 vs 2 gpu topic. I think i will stick with the original plan of one gpu with the water cooling and think about overclocking. I plan on ordering today and incorporating your suggestions. Thank you again! |

Hey guys.
I had one last question. Is the upgrade for corsair fans a necessary? I have the standard fans but wasnt sure if they are adequate to help keep the system cool. I am happy with the price point but if they are necessary i can add them. Here is the build I have settled on otherwise. The stock fans are fine. I wouldn't change them.
Looks great. |

If you're going with a liquid cooled system, the stock fans may work better than the Corsair fans. The Corsair fans are the Air Flow models with a low static pressure head; you want high static pressure to go with the radiators. If you have the HydroLux LITE, that probably comes with the Swiftech helix fans that do have a higher pressure head.

i'm a little confused as to why you're going with the X99/Haswell-E platform rather than Z170/Skylake.
according to your stated needs, i think you'd be better served with a either an I5 or I7 Skylake for 2 or fewer video card configs. unless you're planning on 4k or ultra wide screen (21:9) 1440p a single gpu (under water or not) is fine. the Strix card is already factory overclocked. it actually has 3 settings with the option of creating more personal profiles. those settings are an underclocked mode called, "silent", a "gaming" mode, and an "oc" mode. both the gaming and oc modes are various overclocked (compared to a reference card) configs. the Strix card is built on a custom pcb with high-end components built to take the voltage and heat of overclocking. i don't think it has a custom bios (like a Kingpin), so it's still subject to nvidia's conservative throttling bios settings-meaning it won't allow you to burn up the card by pumping too much voltage/heat through it. the Asus custom air cooler/heat sink is more than adequate to handle the cooling requirements of any tweaking done to the card. having the card under custom water cooling does even better: my results with Aventum 3 level cooling never had the cards above 43C even when pushed to the limits of the bios settings. i got 1500MHz out of the boost clock and 8GHz on the memory at 1.217volts. HardOCP got similar performance out of the card on its air cooler with higher thermals (70C) than me. it's a great performer, but it really needs a custom bios to really push its performance. |
