Topic: New Graphics Card (Advice Welcomed) Posted: 05 Jun 2015 at 5:13pm |
I'm currently using an old ATI Radeon HD 6850 1GB in my system, and am looking to upgrade. My configuration is 492376. I'm thinking of getting this as a replacement. I'd like to get the best card I can for $100 or under, but I can spend up to $150 if that gets me a significantly better card. I'm running a single display at 1920x1080. Any advice is appreciated.

I don't have any links to benchmarks to prove it but I think the gtx 750 Ti would be a stronger card for just a little more money. It has less vram but the vram is only as effective as the card and I doubt the gt740 can effectively use the 4gb.
Might be worth the time to Google both and try to find comparisons. |

You can buy a EVGA 750Ti from Newegg for $139 plus a $20 rebate for final price of $119. I agree with bprat22 that the 750Ti will give you better performance. I found one 3DMark score for the 740 that was 2710. The GTX 750 3DMark score from the same source was 4740. The 750Ti would give a better score than the 750. It looks like the 740 may not be a good choice other than price. Even a GTX 750 would be a better choice than the 740.

You're right about the 740 being a bad choice. The 750s look good, but after a bit of research, I located this, which after rebate comes to $170, but beats the hell out of the competition on the benchmarking sites. Its more then I wanted to spend, but I can't complain about performance like that. Suggestions? Is this a good buy?
-edit- After looking at reviews, I'm a bit concerned about buying from this brand. I've also realized I'm not really gonna get what I need for under $150. I've revised my spending max to $200, and am thinking of getting the GTX 960. $190, respected brand, with almost triple the score of what I'm using now. Edited by Thomas_NNY - 06 Jun 2015 at 7:13pm |

Hi Thomas_NNY,
I think you are smart to move up to the GTX 960. Over the long term it will be a better choice. The GTX 970 would be even a better choice if you could scrape up the bucks. Frank |

I agree with Frank. Good move for much better performance and longevity.
