Topic: New LUMOS Gaming/Workstation PC Posted: 13 Oct 2017 at 12:41pm |
Budget:
Up to $4000 Expectations: Gaming at or near max settings at 1440p and Editing and Rendering videos at 1080p or 4K(possibly in the future if I should upgrade my monitor). Usage: I've been a PC gamer for several years now and am retiring my old x17 DS laptop and getting an upgrade. However, I'm new to editing videos but plan on learning and doing a lot of daily vlogging and editing videos. I need a machine that can handle all of this, but I'm not sure how to build it. Thus I am relying on the expertise of the DS community . Special Needs: IMPORTANT: I need a lot of storage space. I'm not sure what the best SSD/HDD setup is for video editing with gaming on Steam,Origin, etc. but from what I researched I think the best way is SSD 1 for OS/Software like Adobe, SSD 2 for Project Files/Source Footage, SSD 3 for Cache/Scratch and Games. Again I'm not sure if this is the best way so feel free to suggest better(and cheaper if possible) methods of storage. I prefer not to use RAID setups though. PS: I want the lighting setup that the LUMOS has on it's config page. I would like to know how to order it when I do go to purchase. Saved Ticket #: No ticket Yet Specifications: N/A Thanks for the help. |

Best cpu for gaming is a quad core with above 4GHz speed on all cores.
Best cpu for workstation is a multi core, more cores the better. More cores = lower speeds. So it will have to lean one way or the other, which is higher priority? Workstation or gaming? Edited by DST4ME - 13 Oct 2017 at 6:29pm |

Higher priority is Workstation, but I still would like to be able to game.

Hello. Thanks for the reply. I prefer All-in-one coolers instead of coolers that require maintenance and refilling. I also have a couple of questions:
1. Regarding the CPU you suggested. I wasn't sure whether I should get the 8700k or the 7820X. I want strong enough CPU power and I heard that overclocking the Skylake-X CPUs like the 7820X can lead to bad thermal problems. Does anyone have any personal experience with the 7820X or any knowledge of how it performs? 2.Does the "2x" in the Storage Set 2: 2x Storage (4TB Western Digital - Enterprise Edition) mean that I get 2 HDDs or would i need to get 1 HDD for Storage Set 2 and another HDD for Strorage Set 3? I created a build for critiquing: $3,988.00 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Digital Storm Lumos Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7-7820X (8-Core) 3.60GHz Motherboard: ASUS PRIME X299-A (Intel X299 Chipset) (Up to 3x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 32GB DDR4 3000MHz Digital Storm Performance Series Power Supply: 1000W EVGA 1000 GQ Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: External USB - Blu-Ray & DVD Multi-Drive (Burn + Play Blu-Ray & DVDs) (6x BD-R) Storage Set 1: 1x SSD M.2 (500GB Samsung 960 EVO) (NVM Express) Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (3TB Seagate / Toshiba) Storage Set 3: 1x Storage (3TB Seagate / Toshiba) RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB (Performance Edition) (VR Ready) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H100i GTX - 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance) HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Cable Management: Exotic Cable Management - White - (Cable Combs with Custom Color Sleeved Extension Cables) Chassis Fans: Thermaltake Riing (RGB Fans) (Hub Hardware Controller Enabled) Internal Lighting: Remote Controlled LED Lighting System Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: Option Not Available Boost Processor: Stock Factory Turbo Boost Advanced Automatic Overclocking Boost Graphics Card(s): - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Factory Reset Feature (Restore Windows + Drivers) (Partition up to 50GB of Storage) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Is this build okay? |

Sorry been a busy few days.
More cores will have more heat. Keep in mind that the x299 can be upgraded to higher cores(16) on this family vs 8700 is gonna be the max for that line. For aio its h115i or next level up if you are worried about heat. Yes 2x 4gb hdd means you get 2 hdds in raid, you want one hdd as you have it setup. If your storage is important to you, I suggest you read some reviews on the hdd/ssd you want to choose. Personally I use wd red pro drives for storage. Ram is cheap, if you have use for it go 64GB. For psu go corsair 1000w fully modular For restore choose cd not partition. As I mentioned do a little study on those 3GB storage drives. Edited by DST4ME - 17 Oct 2017 at 1:14am |

I have a x299 with a 7800x. Thermals are fine. I'm at 4.4 currently at 35 When I bench system max is 61 degrees. You can see some benchmarks in my review if you like. As our friend Alex would say " You have nothing to worry about. We have sold many x299 and have had no complaints on thermal issues. We thoroughly test our machines before you get it so there is really nothing to worry about." or something like that As to Cooling I just prefer Custom loops to AIO because the pumps in AIO tend not to last and you end up replacing the entire unit within couple years. With hydrolux lite will last about 4 years and then its simply replacing pump not the loop. With hydrolux Pro should last life of PC most likely. as to maintenance. My son still has my first DS PC with the Hydrolux lite. Been 7 years now and replaced pump year 4 in about 15 minutes. I think I have added little fluid like twice in all that time besides when pump was replaced. DST4ME is correct on the HD's. Take his advice This is your baby so take your time and don't jump the gun. Remember you can always just call them and they will talk you through the build if you like. Either way you will get the machine you want and more. They don't F#$K around here. |

All LC systems will suffer from pump failure somewhere between 2 to 5 years in, that is just how pumps work.
You should take into account if you get custom loop, prepare to work for on it. AIO needs no work unless something fails (most times pumps) but has ok cooling Custom loop will need work but has best cooling. So ad Fr3sh said take your time and research and see what you want. The h115i has a 5 year warranty I believe, something to keep in mind, no matter what lc needs some work. Edited by DST4ME - 17 Oct 2017 at 5:09pm |
