Dave,
you don't need a 16-core cpu and 32GB of memory for "high end gaming". i would look for a quad core with the fastest per core rating. that means Intel products i'm afraid. if you're married to an AMD product you can drop all the way down to the mainstream 1600X and get 3.6GHz (base)/4.0 (boost)/ 4.1 (extended frequency range). that's a higher base freq than the 1950X and only 100MHz lower on the XFR for substantially less (like $750). it's can also be harder to stabilize and achieve higher overclocks with so many cores and so much memory. with the savings you can pair those 1080ti's with the upcoming 144Hz 4K monitors, otherwise you've got way too much graphic power for screens of lower rez. Thanks for your reply. I was unsure of if that processor was overkill or not but it does seem that way. I currently have two 2540x1440 144 monitors, will it still be able to handle those monitors? I also have heard that 3xSLI is not really worth a big upgrade from 2x. Thanks again.

i wouldn't invest in anything more than 2 vid cards.
i have 2x980ti's driving a 1440p 144Hz Gsync (primary gaming) monitor and a 1080p 120Hz monitor that i use to surf with and monitor my temps while stressing the system. i have no issues and the second gpu rarely gets pushed past 30% usage. more cpu cores doesn't trump individual core performance. most games have poor multi core optimization and we still see games releasing today that depend more on single thread performance (you'll see 1 or 2 cores highly active while the rest just sit there). currently, you'd cover all of your bases (even those claiming to be dx12 multi core optimized) with a 6-core AT THE MOST. |

that's a good build. it allows you some upgrade path to 4K in the future.
from a personal viewpoint, i've moved away from ASUS mobos due to too many failures/issues with their last few chipsets. i currently have an ASRock and Gigabyte mobo in mine and my son's rigs. both have run w/o a hitch. |

Ok cool, what about a MSI Z270 GAMING M7 as the MOBO, all the other options are ASUS.

i steer clear of MSI boards as well. many people are happy with ASUS and they do have the most user-friendly UEFI/Bios and are typically features rich (although some of the more expensive boards on the market). you would have to special order if the listed options don't work for you. that carries an additional cost and time to the build i'm afraid.
mainly, i search for mobos that offer the features that are most important to me: like onboard high quality sound, top of the line network interfacing, etc. and ASUS typically has these, it's just i'm cursed with their mobos Edited by db188 - 21 Aug 2017 at 7:29pm |

np i could offer you more specific advice if you narrow down your needs.
do you need dual networking ports? are you using external speaker system or are you more of a headphones gamer? do you plan on expanding your internal storage or are you using/will use external options like the cloud or and external hard drive? with the unlocked cpu you have the option to overclock the processor, do you plan on overclocking? if so, that can be an important decision when choosing a mobo. as you can see there are a lot of variables to consider and prioritize in order to tailor a system to your needs. and we're just talking about a mobo here... |

I am not sure what dual networking ports even are :P. I am a headphones gamer as of now, I will use external HDD if I feel I need more storage. I also am unsure of how to overclock my processor as well. Thanks again.

dual networking ports allow you to use your pc as the hub of a home networking config. you can physically connect 2 ethernet cables to the pc that way.
