My current DS PC is going on 6-7 years and while I can still play all AAA games, its getting to the point that everything has to be on low settings. So its time to upgrade but I’m having a hard time planning out my build.
Budget: Keep in the low 3k Expectations: Last 5+ years before I need to replacing Good air flow 4k gaming at some point Adding another 1080 at some point Usage: Gaming, every day use and sometimes work More information: I’m not big on cosmetics. I care more about the performance vs how colorful it is and bang for the buck. Don’t get me wrong, if I had 6k to spend this baby would be have it all. I already have a 3TB hard drive in my current build, which is maybe 3 months old. Questions: Storage: I normally just keep windows on the SSD and everything else on my 3TB hard drive. However, I would not mind putting some games on the SSD due to load speeds. Should I upgrade to the 960GB SSD or is 480GB enough? Memory: Is 32GB worth it? Power: Is a 750W power supply going to be enough power to run two 1080s? Cooling: Since I want to overclock the CPU, I want to upgrade the cooling. Which option would be best, and price efficient (As much as I would love HydroLux PRO, I cannot afford that)? I was thinking the H20: Stage 2: Digital Storm Vortex or the H20: Stage 2: Corsair H115i. Fans: Should I stick with Standard fans or upgrade to the Corsair Airflow Performance Edition Fans? Any input would be great in helping me give DS my money =) Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Digital Storm Velox Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7-7800X (6-Core) (Up to 4.30 GHz) Motherboard: ASUS TUF X299 MARK 2 (Intel X299 Chipset) (Up to 3x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 32GB DDR4 3000MHz Digital Storm Performance Series Power Supply: 750W EVGA SuperNOVA (750 G3) (Fully Modular) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: - No Thanks Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (480GB Digital Storm Performance Series) Storage Set 2: - No Thanks Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB (Performance Edition) (VR Ready) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Digital Storm Vortex 120mm Liquid CPU Cooler (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance) HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Cable Management: Premium Cable Management (Strategically Routed & Organized for Airflow) Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock CPU - Up to 4.4GHz (Depends on Cooling and Motherboard) Boost Graphics Card(s): - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows 10 Installation CD Only (Clean Install with No Drivers) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 15-20 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) |

Hi milkey... You definitely don't need the 32gigs ram. 16 Gigs is plenty.
The 750 watt psu should be good for 1080 sli, but I personally would get the 850watt because that's me just making sure to have enough headroom. I would change the DS branded cooler for a H115i Corsair for its 5 year warranty. I believe the DS branded only has their own warranty 1 parts warranty. As far as the cpu, all testing I've seen shows the quad core 7700k getting better performance in gaming , in some cases 20-30%, over the 6 core 7800k. The X299 mobo does have the quad channel memory vs the Z270 dual channel, but most games don't utilize it. Whether 2-3 years down the road , games will make better use of the added cores and wider ram bus is unknown. I would get what's proven better now. The Velox case is a right facing window setup. I just mention it because a lot of folks don't pick up on it. Nothing wrong with your config if you stay with it. Hope this helps. |
