Topic: New Video card help with existing motherboard. Posted: 01 Jan 2015 at 8:10am |
I am looking to squeeze out another video card on my existing motherboard/spec. I was wondering if the Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 would work for me?
I am considering this card: Nvidia GTX 970 Current spec: Digital Storm Desktop Processor: Intel Core i7 930 2.8 ghz (Quad core) – overclocked to around 3.5 ghz Motherboard: Evga X58 LE Edition SLI (Intel X58 chipset) System Memory: 6 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz Digitial Storm certified performance series Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI compatible) Current video card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 480 1.5GB Windows 7 Pro I think my power supply is fine, but I am worried about compatibility with the motherboard. If the 970 is not an option what would be the next best Nvidia card for my existing motherboard? Other thoughts or considerations? Thanks for the time. |

Hi neg..... The gtx 970 will give you a huge boost in gaming and your system can handle it. The psu is plenty and the motherboard is a Pcie 2.0 and cards today are Pcie 3.0 , but they are backward compatible with little or no performance loss.
Here's a link that shows the 480 vs the 970 ....... http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1135?vs=1355 Double the frames with less temps and power needed. Win, win, win. Just checking....... you can replace the 480 with the 970, but can't sli the two. Edited by bprat22 - 01 Jan 2015 at 8:34am |

Hi bprat22 -
Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. That is good news for me.
I have posted on some other forums to get some other opinions and some have mentioned increasing my memory to 12GB.
Do you agree with that? I am not sure Digital Storm would have 6 GB of the older memory sticks I bough several years ago. But I figured I would call them today and see what they might recommend.
I would appreciate your input or anyone elses on the matter.
Happy new year.

8 Gb is still all most gaming needs. Your 6gb should still do it but requirements are increasing. For your triple channel ram the next jump would be 3x 4gb like you said and your mobo is DDR3 at 1600 ram. Any matched set from Corsair, Kingston, etc. should work but DS is a good source for info.
Some memory sites like Crucial.com do have memory compatibility tools that will scan your system and give recommendations. Unless your running out of ram, I'd keep what you have for now, but things are changing. Good Luck. |
