I have an old HP laptop that recently upgraded to Windows 10. I set a password after that. I remembered it is a local account password not Microsoft account. I tried a free program called Ophcrack, which seems doesn't work. Maybe the password was strong enough.

Anybody reading this, it only takes a couple of minutes to burn a password reset disc /stick. Never had to use one but still have it just in case.

As far as I know, there are many excellent commercial password tools like PCUnlocker, Passcape, Passware, Elcomsoft, Kon-Boot. They can also help you remove forgotten Windows password.

There are many software out there but I /we like to recommend ones we know /have used.
The point here is that you should make a password recovery disk now so That you don't need another software/pc. Edited by DST4ME - 01 Sep 2017 at 7:48pm |

Password reset disk works only on the same computer that it was created on. I don't create a password reset disk any longer until I found this trick - Reset Lost Windows 10 Password with Sticky Keys Method. Just use a installation disk and I can use it to unlock all my locked Windows systems. |

It's just so much easier to create a password reset disk than to go thru that. It doesn't even have to be a dedicated Disc/stick for it.
That is good info for those without the very easy to make reset Disc. |

Keep a few things in mind:
1. This thread is about bypassing your own password on same pc. But the method I linked to for the OP allows you to unlock any pc. 2. The sticky method is not at all easy or comfortable for most users as they will not understand command prompt, I see people screw up the drive letter which is why i did not post it. also at the end of that article it falsely states that "to protect your computer set a bios password". That is bs, it takes me less then 30 seconds to by pass a bios password. 3. Truth is that passwords are bs and easily bypassed no matter where you put them on windows or bios. 4. To each his own, you like the sticky method, then more power to you , here we keep things simple so all can follow no matter what level knowledge of computers they have. Thanks for sharing some will find it helpful I'm sure , I just want to advise people to pay careful attention to drive letters in sticky method. Edited by DST4ME - 04 Sep 2017 at 7:33am |

I have never had to use it but my impression is that the password reset Disc is just a Disc with the reset file on it that Windows looks for when you hit reset on login screen. There is a separate bootable reset Disc you can set up, so depends what you created. My reset Disc isn’t a iso bootable but just the file.

That is not how you use the password disk.
Where it says "select usb" you can choose your disk Edited by DST4ME - 26 Sep 2017 at 11:32pm |

Why even bother with passwords when the lay person can google his way into your system in < 5 minutes?

It seems that you forgot to set up USB as the first boot device on the Bios . You can follow this guide to reset password for Windows 10 Edited by Vakserty - 27 Mar 2018 at 11:21pm |

I didn’t forget because it doesn’t have to be a bootable flash drive. For bootable flash drive files, yes, the USB has to be setup in Bios. |
